GE and ATI form partnership to create a meltless metal for AM

Metal 3D printing is a staple in the 3D printing industry; bringing new innovations and a newfound home in sectors such as aerospace and defense or marine and boating. Continuing in this trend of pushing the seemingly limitless boundaries of 3D printing has been GE, a main actor, and innovator in metal 3D printing for the aerospace sector. Following in their long list of announcements this year is a new development that is sure to excite 3D printing fanatics around the world.

In a recent partnership between GE Aviation and Allegheny Technologies Incorporated (ATI), the two partners have embarked on a project with the aim of creating a new meltless titanium alloy powder manufacturing technology, that will be created specifically for additive manufacturing.

Based in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania; ATI is a leader in nickel and titanium alloy production, with most of their metal production being used for advanced jet engines and other 3D printed products. With their largest market being the aerospace and defense industries, they are also active in other sectors such as oil, gas, medicine, automotive and energy.

On GE’s part, they have continuously been on the hunt for new ways to expand their manufacturing business unit, such as seen with their investment in Concept Laser this year; developments that are helping to solidify themselves in metal 3D printing. With both members of this partnership looking for new ways to grow and expand this industry further, there is no doubt that this will be a fruitful partnership in the end.

To help fast-line the creation of the meltless titanium alloy powder, the partners have included terms in their agreement, which will see the creation of an R&D pilot production facility.
