U.S. Marine Corps Awards 3YOURMIND and Phillips Corp. $2.5M Contract to Enhance Additive Manufacturing Capabilities

Published on June 27, 2023 by Avery S.

3YOURMIND and Phillips Corp. Federal Division have recently announced their partnership with Marine Corps System Command’s Advanced Manufacturing Operations Cell (AMOC) to enhance digital additive manufacturing (AM) capabilities. The collaboration aims to integrate 3YOURMIND’s part identification software with Marine Corps System Command’s Digital Manufacturing Data Vault (DMDV).

The DMDV serves as a centralized digital repository for the Marine Corps, providing crucial data and design solutions for AMOC to scale up its existing operations. By integrating 3YOURMIND’s part identification software with DMDV, the approval process for spare parts and components required in the field will be significantly enhanced. This effort aligns with the Department of Defense’s broader mission to reshore supply chains, establish distributed manufacturing networks, and sustain legacy equipment through additive technologies.

The custom-developed algorithm for the project focuses on 12 key impact factors

Following the successful completion of a first-year contract, 3YOURMIND and Phillips Corp. Federal Division have been awarded a $2.5 million contract for AMOC. During the initial year, the partnership achieved several operational milestones, including the validation of 3YOURMIND’s part identification capabilities by screening over 10,000 parts and demonstrating seamless connectivity with other software systems used by the DMDV. The project employed a custom-developed algorithm focusing on 12 key impact factors, enabling the assessment of printability and the value of 3D printing per component. From the analysis of the first 10,000 parts based on priority and printability, 50 parts were identified with the potential for at least 1000 days of lead time savings per component.

Expanding Capabilities

In the second year of the contract, the partnership will expand upon these achievements. The aim is to further configure 3YOURMIND’s software with proprietary and third-party systems, including PTC Windchill, which is utilized by the DMDV. AMOC will also introduce capabilities for 2D drawing analysis, allowing for efficient bulk analysis of technical data packages and identifying compelling AM use cases.

The AMOC contract follows the existing partnership between 3YOURMIND, Phillips Corp. Federal Division, and the Naval Information Warfare Center (NIWC) Pacific. This collaboration with NIWC has provided technical expertise in software and hardware, facilitating the development of a seamless digital production workflow that enables distributed manufacturing. As a result of this partnership, AMOC will also gain access to 3YOURMIND’s order and production management software capabilities.

William Cuervo, the Vice President of Sales, North America at 3YOURMIND, expressed his enthusiasm for the collaboration, highlighting the opportunity to address common technology and spare parts gaps in the Marine Corps. Cuervo emphasized the potential for additive manufacturing to enrich the quality of life for warfighters, contributing to the operational readiness that the U.S. Marine Corps takes pride in.

The partnership between 3YOURMIND, Phillips Corp. Federal Division, and AMOC signifies a significant step towards leveraging additive manufacturing to meet the Marine Corps’ needs. By integrating advanced software solutions and utilizing digital repositories, the collaboration aims to optimize the production and approval process for critical spare parts and components, ultimately enhancing the operational readiness of the U.S. Marine Corps.
