Unica: Selle Italia’s 3D Printed Saddle that Adapts to Cyclists’ Pressure
Selle Italia has unveiled Unica, a saddle whose inner padding is designed and 3D-printed based on each user’s pressure data. The saddle is purchased through authorized retailers, where the cyclist undergoes a preliminary analysis. The company aims to improve comfort and performance at the primary point of contact with the bicycle.
Selle Italia explains that 3D-printed saddles offer differentiated cushioning zones. In Unica, the reticular structure of the padding, that is, a network of small interconnected cells, is not based on predefined zones. It is designed for each cyclist based on pressure mapping performed with idmatch, Selle Italia’s measurement system. At this time, Selle Italia has not specified which 3D printing technology it uses to manufacture Unica’s padding.
The shape of the saddle is that of the chosen model and does not change. What adapts is the 3D-printed internal structure, designed according to the rider’s pressure distribution. According to the manufacturer, this optimizes pressure distribution and support and improves stability, which helps maintain good posture for longer.
How an Unica Saddle Is Made
The process consists of three steps. First, the cyclist undergoes a pressure analysis at an authorized Unica center. Next, the center places an order for the saddle, and the manufacturing process can be tracked via a web app. Finally, the saddle arrives at the same center about three weeks after the analysis, where it is mounted on the bike.
Selle Italia notes that its saddle is not intended solely for professionals, but for any cyclist, regardless of skill level. The brand adds that changing bikes or riding position does not necessarily require a new saddle. Usually, it simply requires adjusting the saddle’s position. Repeating the analysis is only recommended if the changes significantly alter the pressure distribution.
