Top 5 Videos: 3D Printing on an Offshore Platform

Published on September 17, 2023 by Michael M.

Hello and welcome back to the top 5 videos of the week in the world of 3D printing! While you may rest assured we’ve got a whole range of interesting stories and takes from the industry. Join us as we dive into SLS printing and some cold Atlantic water to visit an offshore platform, then take a trip down California way to check out some 3D printed homes. Both food and drink are also on the menu as we sample some 3D printed sugar creations and help a brewery sort its storage with the help of 3D printed solutions!

Top 1: The Offshore 3D Printing Revolution

In this video from 3D printer manufacturer Roboze, we take a trip up to the North Sea to visit an offshore rig welcoming its newest permanent member. Through interviews with members of the crew, learn about how the installation of an industrial 3D printer on board makes life easier for the rig and its crew. From fabricating replacement parts on demand to using materials that can resist the harsh northern storms, the use of 3D printing on-site is a paradigm shift for many industries. Watch the video to learn more about how Roboze is signaling the future of additive manufacturing around the world.

Top 2: Recycled Bottles Make 3D Printed Houses

Leaving the North Sea and taking a left turn at Albuquerque, we join Kirsten Dirksen as she meets with California-based company Azure. Specializing in 3D printing homes with recycled material, take an in-depth look at the style and construction process of these recycled abodes. Get a firsthand look at the fine details alongside the company co-founder Ross Maguire and learn about the modular construction style of Azure’s homes and the planning that goes into each future home or annex. Discover what building a home in one day for under 50k looks like by watching the video below!

Top 3: Thermoforming and SLS Printing

In this video from Mayku, we learn more about selective laser sintering (SLS) 3D printing and how it can work in tandem with thermoforming. Specifically by creating robust, high-quality templates for thermoforming, the video goes on to describe why SLS makes such a good fit, both due to the materials and the level of precision in the 3D prints themselves. They even go one step further by providing several tips for those who are interested in utilizing this method in their own processes, such as how to avoid warping, and surface finishing and even how to choose the right materials to use for SLS printing to get the most quality out of your thermoforming process.

Top 4: Sugar Lab Taste Test

In this episode of Hello World with Ashlee Vance, we take a look at the creative side of edible 3D printed creations at LA-based cyberconfectioner, Sugar Lab. Are you the sort of person who might approach the idea of a 3D printed dessert with skepticism? Well, you’re not alone. Join Vance as he experiences the color and taste sensations of a 3D printed culinary experience and take a look behind the scenes at the formation and manufacture of the candies inside a custom binder jetting 3D printer. See for yourself whether you would be converted into trying a 3D printed bonbon by the end of the video!

Top 5: Organized Ale at The Alementary

You thought we saved dessert for last, but of course, the only thing better than a sugary treat at the end of a long week is a cold beer. If you’re anything like me, you enjoy beer and workspace organization in fairly equal measures. Thankfully, this video from The Alementary scratches that niche itch! Learn a bit about the distribution and organization behind the scenes in a brewery while Blake shows us his novel solution to an age-old organizational problem. Armed with a 3D printer and creativity, it’s a great example of how a little project can make a huge difference in the workplace. So next time you’re ordering a pint, maybe you’ll think about the journey it had to take to get to your glass.
