WEBINAR: From the Deep Sea to Humanoid Robots: Building Industrial Parts on the Carbon Platform

Thursday 22 October 2026, 18:00 to 19:00

Industrial and robotics hardware has to hold up in harsh conditions: pressure, moisture, chemicals, heat and constant contact. Development teams are also expected to iterate faster than ever. Traditional tooling and single-process manufacturing often can’t keep up.

In this webinar, Dana McCallum of Carbon and Pat Barrett of Sherpa Design walk through two applications that show what the Carbon platform can do. First up is a deep-sea sampling manifold for the Monterey Bay Aquarium Research Institute (MBARI). Earlier materials had pitted, leaked and softened under bleach cleaning. Sherpa’s designers, engineers and machinists worked together from the first CAD model. They printed the part in Carbon EPX 150 and finished it with 5-axis machining, and solved problems in the design rather than finding them in production. The result holds watertight seals at 500 psi and is now deployed in MBARI’s autonomous sampling system.

Next, they look at a lattice skin for humanoid robot arms. Using computational design and Carbon’s EPU elastomers, a lattice can be tuned zone by zone for protective cushioning, breathability and light weight. Designs can move from prototype to production in the final material, with no tooling investment.

Together, these two very different applications show how the right material, design approach and production partner can turn ambitious hardware ideas into parts that perform in the real world.
