The APEX COAT that mixes 3D printing with fashion

Published on April 17, 2017 by Alexandrea P.

Alexis Walsh is an American stylist who uses 3D printing to design unique pieces. Recently, Walsh has unveiled her latest creation, the APEX COAT, which is decorated with beautiful ornate 3D printed pieces. The APEX COAT was made in collaboration with stylist Justin Hattendort, a specialist in fashion as well as in architectural and industrial design.

Walsh has already presented her 3D print collection, LYSIS and is continuing her creative work with the APEX COAT. This coat was presented at the fashion show “Harvard Identities” on April 15th, and has more planned showings in Berlin, Barcelona and Helsinki.

APEX COAT

The APEX COAT itself is a sleeveless black jacket that reaches to the knees and is decorated with 3D printed pieces. In order to create their coat, the artists’ work combined 3D modeling with customized software and manual assembly techniques.

The 3D printed parts are a type of stud that was created from a translucent material that gives it “cloudy, pearlescent surfaces”. Once printed, they were then attached by hand onto the coat with brass threading and screws. Each one of the 3D printed studs is unlike the other, giving it a more unique and one of a kind feel.

“These formations result in an array of structures that hug the body in sinuous curves, while the stark blacks of the coat’s fabrics serve as a visual contrast to the rounded edges of the studs” explain the designers.

The application that was created for this project was created in order to merge the intuitive nature of manual work with the technological advantages of digital modeling. Before the studs were manufactured, their contours were marked manually onto the dress in the form of a paper pattern. After, it was then photographed and integrated into the simulation. The software then generated the shapes of the patterns and placed them in such a way that each stud would adapt to the curves throughout the coat.

Without a doubt, this is a one of a kind piece that is sure to take the fashion world by storm! Let us know what you think of the APEX COAT by sharing your comment with us below or on our Facebook and Twitter page!
