SALTGATOR Tech Inc., a new company based in Dickinson, Texas, has unveiled a desktop SoftGel injection molding machine aimed at DIY makers. Injection molding has traditionally been confined to large industrial settings, where machines are bulky and costly. Now, SALTGATOR’s compact version is bringing the process to makers in garages, classrooms and offices, making it possible to produce soft, flexible plastic parts on a small scale. Paired with a 3D printer, users can design and print their own molds, opening the door to endless custom creations. But how does this crafting tool work, and what kinds of projects can it make possible?
The idea for SALTGATOR came from hobbyist anglers and garage tinkerers searching for a better way to make soft fishing baits. The company’s name was actually inspired by an alligator spotted on a fishing trip, an animal equally at home in salt and fresh water, symbolizing adaptability and resilience. That spirit carries into the machine’s design, enabling users to create durable, tailored products with ease. From fishing lures to phone cases, keyboard caps to toys, SALTGATOR puts soft-plastic manufacturing within anyone’s reach.
SALTGATOR is compatible with molds made of diverse materials.
How SALTGATOR Works
Designed with simplicity in mind, the SALTGATOR is accessible even to first-time users. There’s no software to install, no calibration to fuss over and no extra parts to hunt down. It’s a complete, all-in-one unit. To begin, users either pour SoftGel directly into the machine or draw it in. The device holds up to 4 fl oz (120 ml) of material.
Once loaded into SALTGATOR, the gel is heated in a gasket-sealed chamber that traps fumes and odors. The real-time temperature display, adjustable between 176°F and 410°F, lets users fine-tune heat levels with a quick tap on the interface. Then, the SoftGel is injected into the mold through the nozzle, and the finished part sets in just three minutes.
It’s easy to fill SALTGATOR and control its temperature.
Compatible Materials
SALTGATOR offers its own SoftGel blends, but the machine is compatible with any low-temperature thermoplastics that meet its safety and flow guidelines. It’s built specifically for soft, flexible materials, ranging from gummy-soft to eraser-firm.
Currently, SALTGATOR’s SoftGel lineup comes in three options: 0A (ultra-soft), 20A (medium) and 40A (firm). Users can work with each on its own or mix them in different ratios to achieve a custom level of hardness. Though rigid materials like PLA can’t be injected, they can still be incorporated. Rigid parts can be placed inside a mold, then encased in soft material for hybrid designs.
As for molds, SALTGATOR works with a wide variety of options, from common 3D printing plastics like PLA, ABS and PETG to more advanced choices like PEEK, aluminum, copper, high-temp silicone and high-temp epoxy resin.
Benefits and Applications
With its compact size, straightforward operation and surprising capability, SALTGATOR aims to make soft-material injection molding accessible to anyone. According to the company, users can go from heating to demolding their first part in just 10–15 minutes. The device is designed with home use in mind, running on low-temperature, non-toxic materials and featuring thermal protection and a sealed chamber to guard against burns or spills. Additionally, the machine’s exterior stays cool to the touch for user safety. Another added benefit is that leftover material can be remelted and reused. This reduces waste and stretches every batch further.
The injection mold machine is ideal for home environments.
To encourage creativity, SALTGATOR supports both ready-made and custom molds. The company is building a free library of STL files that users can download and print, but makers are equally encouraged to design their own. Whether you’re crafting fishing lures, prototyping hardware, teaching hands-on classes or creating art pieces, the machine is a flexible tool for bringing ideas to life.
Pricing, Availability and Community
At around $399—or $249 for early Kickstarter backers—SALTGATOR comes in far below the cost of industrial injection molders. The campaign also offers additional molds and gel packs. For those eager to explore soft, flexible materials without the price or complexity of factory-scale equipment, it presents a straightforward entry point.
SALTGATOR’s creators are fostering a community around the device through their Discord server, where users can connect with the team, preview mold designs, share tips and showcase their creations. It’s a tool designed for everyday inventors, educators, and makers—anyone ready to turn an idea into something tangible.
