Without slicing software, 3D printing is not possible. The slicer is the essential intermediate step between designing the model and printing it. It translates the 3D model into successive layers and generates the necessary instructions for the printer in the form of G-code. Today, there are many slicing software programs available, each with its own specific features, but all sharing the same goal: to efficiently prepare the model for printing and transmit the instructions to the machine. Among them, Repetier-Host stands out by offering an interface capable of hosting multiple slicing engines. We will explore the features and advantages of Repetier-Host and see if it can meet the specific needs of users, regardless of their level of experience.
Repetier is a German project developed by Hot-World GmbH, based in Willich. Since 2011, the company has launched several software solutions dedicated to 3D printing. What began as a hobby project has gradually evolved into a complete software suite, including Repetier-Server and Repetier-Host, available in version 2.3.1 for Windows and Linux, and version 1.2.1 for macOS. Repetier-Host is open source software that can be downloaded free of charge. Designed for both personal and professional use, it has been a huge success within the RepRap community in Germany. Thanks to its many features, it continues to be appreciated by a wide range of users—whether beginners, experienced users, or professionals.
Repetier Host is easy and intuitive to use.
Despite its wealth of features, installing Repetier-Host is simple and intuitive when you follow the step-by-step instructions. According to the developer, the software is compatible with the vast majority of FDM 3D printers available on the market. The connection is made via a USB cable between the printer and the computer. Once the printer is detected on one of the ports, configuration can begin. Repetier-Host allows you to manage up to 16 extruders, which can be configured at this stage. This is also where you can set the interface language, making it easy to get started right away.
The Slicer Repetier Host
The process from file to 3D printed object consists of four steps:
- Insert model data, position, rotate, duplicate, etc.
- Cut according to the defined settings
- Preview the model, selected areas, or layers
As a slicer host, Repetier-Host offers access to four different slicing engines, suited to various uses and preferences: Cura Engine, Skeinforge, Slic3r and Slic3r Prusa Edition. Users can also use whatever slicer they want with Repetier-Host. This allows you to slice and modify your model, adjusting the print settings according to your needs. The 3D model can be edited as a whole, by specific areas, or even layer by layer. To avoid problems during printing, it is important that the layer height is less than the nozzle diameter. After slicing, all extruder movements and generated support structures are clearly visible in the software.
Repetier-Host also offers a multiple printing feature, allowing you to print several objects simultaneously. Simply import multiple models, within the limits of the print bed size. Their position is optimized automatically, but you can also organize them manually. Another interesting option is the Velocity Painting feature, which changes the appearance of the printed surface. It superimposes a black and white image onto the model: light areas are printed at a slower speed, while dark areas are printed faster. This variation in speed creates a relief on the surface of the object, offering a unique aesthetic effect.
The Velocity Painting feature allows you to create relief and model the texture of the object’s surface.
Remote Access Via Repetier Server
Repetier-Host stands out for its ease of use, offering intuitive operation and total control over the printer and printed parts. According to the manufacturer, it supports all types of filaments with optimal quality: PLA, ABS, PETG, metal, chocolate, and even filaments for bioprinting. A major advantage is the ability to control the printer remotely via the Repetier server. This allows full access from a PC, tablet, or smartphone. With the Repetier Informer app, you can set up alerts and receive push notifications about the status of your prints directly on your phone. If a problem arises, you can quickly intervene remotely via Repetier Server to resolve the situation.
Repetier-Host offers a wide range of settings and features thanks to its many built-in tools. The ability to choose between four different slicers encourages experimentation and flexibility: if one has limitations, you can always try another. In addition, its attractive gray, white, and blue design, combined with an intuitive interface, makes for a particularly pleasant user experience. To learn more, click HERE.
