Chilean Army Boosts Innovation With the Opening of a 3D Printing Center

The incorporation of advanced technologies in the training of future military polytechnic engineers has been increasing in recent years. In the most recent example, the Chilean Army has taken a significant step with the recent inauguration of the 3D Printing Center at the Military Polytechnic Academy (Acapomil). This center not only opens up new possibilities in the field of technical learning, but also underlines the institution’s commitment to innovation and the development of practical skills to accompany theoretical knowledge. Thus, additive manufacturing comes to Acapomil with a clear focus: to enhance the training of engineers capable of designing, building and optimizing complex systems.

The center has two printing systems that allow the creation of prototypes of different types. One is based on filament manufacturing, suitable for the creation of functional prototypes, and the other uses resin, ideal for the production of models with complex details and high precision. This technology, which goes beyond the simple manufacture of parts, enables students to materialize their ideas into tangible objects, transforming abstract concepts into concrete solutions. Thus, future engineers will be able to design and manufacture from small components to prototypes of complete systems. In this way, they effectively integrate theory with practice in the military field.

The adoption of 3D printing will allow students to quickly and inexpensively experiment with different designs. Prototypes will be able to be iteratively modified and improved. This accelerates learning and improves understanding of technical principles. Students will be able to develop specific parts for engineering projects, create models to explain advanced concepts or even design innovative solutions to real problems in the military. In addition, the center is designed to promote essential skills in any engineering professional, such as teamwork, interdisciplinary collaboration and complex problem solving. These pillars, which are fundamental in both the military and industrial fields, will be reinforced by the work dynamics that 3D printing makes possible.

Acapomil, with the incorporation of this 3D Printing Center, is not only committed to the technical training of its students, but also to the integration of cutting-edge technologies that will allow them to be better prepared for future challenges. This advanced learning environment demonstrates the institution’s commitment to academic excellence and to the creation of professionals capable of facing the challenges of the Chilean Army and, by extension, global challenges in the field of engineering and technology. The implementation of 3D printing is not only an update of the tools available to cadets, but a pedagogical transformation that places Acapomil at the forefront of training military engineers capable of thinking critically, adapting to new technologies.
