Formnext 2025 Finalists Highlight Cutting-Edge 3D Printing Innovations

The shortlist for the Formnext Awards 2025 has been unveiled, showcasing some of the most innovative applications and technologies in additive manufacturing. This year’s finalists reflect the industry’s growing emphasis on speed, sustainability, and education, with new 3D printing solutions emerging across sectors from healthcare to heavy industry. The winners will be announced during the Formnext trade fair in Frankfurt on November 20, 2025.

Across six categories, the finalists represent a diverse mix of breakthroughs that push the limits of AM technology. Many projects focus on how 3D printing can solve real-world challenges, from custom medical devices to sustainable material reuse. Visitors will be able to explore all the finalists at a dedicated exhibition space in Hall 11.0 of the Messe Frankfurt venue.

Among the most notable finalists are several projects that showcase how 3D printing continues to transform design and production workflows. In the Design Award category, the Limb Kind Foundation and HP were recognized for their project providing 3D printed prosthetic sockets for children in Kenya, manufactured overseas and fitted locally at low cost. Meanwhile, Portuguese company Erofio earned attention for producing a fully 3D printed metal mold for a 100-tonne injection molding machine, achieving lighter tools, lower energy use, and faster cycles.

In the (R)Evolution Award category, Laempe Mössner Sinto’s automated 3D printing line for BMW’s foundry has become one of the fastest binder jetting systems in the world, producing more than 1,100 sand cores per day. The technology demonstrates how additive processes can merge with traditional casting to deliver both speed and precision at an industrial scale.

Sustainability also takes center stage this year. EOS was selected as a finalist for its innovative filtration and oxidation system designed to capture and neutralize hazardous byproducts from metal 3D printing, converting reactive waste into reusable materials. Similarly, Continuum Powders and Smart Materials 3D are exploring how recycled feedstocks and biodegradable materials can reshape the AM value chain.

Formnext’s Start-Up Award finalists are pushing 3D printing into new frontiers. Thai company OsseoLabs is using AI-assisted modeling to create personalized 3D printed bone implants, while Perfi Technologies has developed a volumetric printing process capable of producing complex objects in seconds rather than hours. Such developments underscore how rapidly the AM landscape is evolving beyond traditional layer-by-layer manufacturing.
