Apple Unveils “Apple You”: A 3D-Printed Personalized Product Line

It has long been Apple’s mission to make technology feel intuitive, seamless and, above all, personal. The name is literally iPhone. Now, the Silicon Valley tech giant is taking that philosophy one step further. On March 31, Apple quietly announced the launch of Apple You, a new product line featuring fully 3D-printed iPhones and AirPods designed to match the exact physical dimensions of each user.

The announcement comes just weeks after reports that Apple has been exploring expanded use of additive manufacturing, particularly metal 3D printing, across its product lineup.

No two people are the same, so why should the devices we use every day be? According to Apple, the process begins with a biometric scan performed either in-store or remotely using an upgraded version of Face ID capable of capturing precise measurements of a user’s hand geometry and ear shape. That data is then sent to Apple’s manufacturing facilities, where titanium additive manufacturing systems produce a device built specifically for the owner. Apple claims the AirPods can be printed in just two hours, while the custom iPhone takes just under four hours to produce, with a full turnaround time of approximately 24 hours.

Finally, a Phone That Actually Fits

The flagship product of the Apple You lineup is the personalized iPhone. Rather than choosing between standard 6.1-inch or 6.7-inch models, customers will now receive a device sized and shaped precisely to their hand. Apple says the device’s width, curvature and button placement are all adjusted to match each user’s grip profile, resulting in improved ergonomics and fewer accidental drops.

Apple cites internal research suggesting the average person drops their phone more than 150 times per year, often because devices are slightly too large for comfortable one-handed use. With Apple You, the company says each device will be manufactured to match the user’s hand geometry.

Made for Your Ears. Both of Them.

Perhaps the most talked-about product in the Apple You lineup is Apple You AirPods, 3D-printed earbuds shaped to match each user’s individual ear geometry. While several third-party companies already offer custom-molded ear tips, Apple says its approach goes considerably further, with the entire earbud structure redesigned based on biometric data.

Because human ears are rarely perfectly symmetrical, the left and right AirPods may now be slightly different shapes. Apple says this improves comfort, stability and audio performance. It may also solve one of the most common AirPods-related issues: losing them.

Apple says internal research shows that 87% of users have lost at least one AirPod. Early beta testers of Apple

You AirPods reportedly experienced a 98% reduction in what Apple’s internal team has officially classified as “unexpected ear-based ejection events,” the technical term, apparently, for an AirPod launching itself out of your ear uninvited.

The Price of Personalization

Pricing has not yet been announced, but Apple describes the lineup as its most personal product family yet, which likely includes a very personal relationship with your bank account.
