Two years back the Yhnova project was launched, with the various stakeholders demonstrating how 3D technologies could be used to buildaffordable and sustainable housing. Now the 3D printed house in Nantes, France is inhabited: a family has just moved into the 3D printed social housing.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\">3D printing is increasingly seen as a viable solution in the construction sector, with initiatives aimed at demonstrating how it could become a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.3dnatives.com\/en\/3d-printed-houses-new-story-icon-140320184\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\">response to the housing crisis<\/span><\/a><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\">. The Yhnova project is a good example, its main objective being to offer affordable social housing to families in Nantes. Franky Trichet, deputy mayor of Nantes explained: &#8221; <\/span><em><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\">The future of the project from the point of view of the city is twofold. The first is to see if we can integrate this type of construction. The second objective for us is to see if we can apply these principles of construction for other types of public buildings &#8211; such as sports halls or communal buildings<\/span><\/em><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\"> . &#8220;<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_38607\" style=\"width: 710px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-38607\" class=\"size-full wp-image-38607\" src=\"https:\/\/www.3dnatives.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/nantes1.jpg\" alt=\"social housing printed in 3D\" width=\"700\" height=\"400\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-38607\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\">Photo credits: BBC<\/span><\/p><\/div>\n<h3><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\">More economical and sustainable<\/span><\/h3>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\">After its <\/span><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\">inauguration last March<\/span><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\">, the 3D printed house of 95 square meters is now inhabited by a family of 3 children and their parents. Composed of 4 rooms, it was made thanks to a 3D printing process called BatiPrint3D, developed by researchers from the University of Nantes. It uses a robotic arm 4 meters long to and guided by a laser to deposit different layers of materials:\u00a0a layer of formwork, a similar material to a foam for\u00a0insulation, and then a layer of a concrete mixture.\u00a0Thus, a wall made with this technology is thick, insulated and durable.<\/span><\/span><\/p><div class=\"dnati-inside-article-leaderboard\" style=\"text-align: center;\" id=\"dnati-2396828067\"><a data-no-instant=\"1\" href=\"https:\/\/app.swapcard.com\/login\/event\/additiv-defense-2026\/ticket\/VGlja2V0VHlwZV83MDM4MQ==\/page\/UmVnaXN0cmF0aW9uRm9ybV81NjE4Ng==\" rel=\"noopener\" class=\"a2t-link\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"LB (4)\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.3dnatives.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2026\/03\/LB-4.gif\" alt=\"\"  width=\"850\" height=\"150\"   \/><\/a><\/div>\n<div id=\"attachment_38611\" style=\"width: 710px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-38611\" class=\"size-full wp-image-38611\" src=\"https:\/\/www.3dnatives.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/nantes3.jpg\" alt=\"social housing printed in 3D\" width=\"700\" height=\"400\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-38611\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\">The robotic arm of the BatiPrint3D process<\/span><\/p><\/div>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\">The 3D printing of the house took 54 hours, from there it\u00a0will take approximately 4 months to add windows, doors and the roof. The cost of the construction would amount to \u20ac200,000 which is, according to the project stakeholders, 20% cheaper than traditional construction techniques. They even explain that they could possibly reduce the printing time to 33 hours!<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\">As the Ramdani family dropped their bags in their new home, the father explains: &#8221; <\/span><em><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\">It is a great honour to be part of this project. We lived in a neighbourhood of social housing dating from the 60s. So this is a big change for us. Here we have a house and a garden, it&#8217;s something else! <\/span><\/em><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\">&#8220;<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_38608\" style=\"width: 710px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-38608\" class=\"size-full wp-image-38608\" src=\"https:\/\/www.3dnatives.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/nantes.jpg\" alt=\"social housing printed in 3D\" width=\"700\" height=\"400\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-38608\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\">The parents of the Ramdani family (photo credits: BBC)<\/span><\/p><\/div>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">&#8220;<em>For 2,000 years\u00a0<\/em><em>there has been no change in the paradigm of the construction process.\u00a0We wanted to sweep this whole process.\u00a0<\/em><em>That&#8217;s why I say we&#8217;re at the beginning of a story.\u00a0We just wrote: &#8220;Once upon a time&#8221;.\u00a0And his work will &#8220;force&#8221; private companies to &#8220;take the pen&#8221; and continue with the narrative<\/em>&#8221; said Francky Tricket, leader of the innovative\u00a0board.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-35033 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.3dnatives.com\/es\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/casa3D1.jpg\" alt=\"live in a house printed in 3D\" width=\"700\" height=\"400\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">This experimental home will be equipped with a range of sensors and monitoring systems, to monitor the air quality, humidity and temperature of the house.\u00a0This &#8220;smart home&#8221; will\u00a0allow a reduction in energy costs.\u00a0The house was also designed for disabled people, with wheelchair access and the ability to control everything from a smartphone.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-35028 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.3dnatives.com\/es\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/batiprint-1.jpg\" alt=\"live in a house printed in 3d\" width=\"700\" height=\"400\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\">Benoit Furet of the University of Nantes explains that this project is only a beginning. He is currently on a 3D printing project of 18 houses in the north of Paris and a shopping center of 700 square meters. To be followed closely!
