This project has brought forth a material that can be used to create structures that are able to transform in both shape and size at any time. Both partners claim to have developed the first liquid and pneumatic 3D printing material that could potentially be used in the automotive sector.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\" style=\"text-align: justify;\">Research on 3D printing materials has been increasing lately, such as seen with <a href=\"\/en\/uf-3d-printed-medical-implants120520174\/\">3D printed liquid silicon<\/a>e and <a href=\"\/en\/metamaterials-3d-printed180420184\/\">metamaterials<\/a> that are able to control sound and vibrations. MIT is no stranger to additive manufacturing projects which have focused more specifically around <a href=\"\/en\/graphene-aerogel120720174\/\">graphene<\/a>. This time, MIT has collaborated with<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>BMW, focusing their attention on liquid materials. This gel keeps the liquid in place, allowing them to create larger or more complex objects. These air chambers allow the structure to inflate, taking on different forms and levels of firmness. Skylar Tibbits, the co-director, and founder of Self-Assembly Lab explains: \u201cIt\u2019s programming it with air. Instead of zeros and ones, you\u2019re sending different pulses of air.\u201d<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>This latest development shows both MIT and BMW\u2019s commitment to pushing the limits of additive manufacturing.
