A new 3D printed school in Qatar is said to be the \u201clargest 3D printed building ever constructed.\u201d Launched in 2025, UCC Holding recently announced that the building is now taking its final shape with the installation of the roof, windows and doors, and interior finishes.<\/p>\n

In June 2025, the printing phase began, using a COBOD 3D concrete printer<\/a>. By July 2026, all the walls were nearly complete. Why such a long gap between the two dates? We don\u2019t know, but it seems that the project fell behind schedule. The fall marks the official end of the printing work.<\/p>\n

A 3D Printed School That’s Part of a Larger Project<\/h2>\n

This construction site is part of an even larger initiative: 14 public schools have been announced. Only two are being built using 3D printing. Each of them measures 20,000 square meters and has two stories. According to figures released by COBOD, the surface area of the 3D-printed walls on the first school is 30,000 square meters<\/strong>, with a cumulative length of over 500 kilometers of deposited layers.<\/strong><\/p>

These results were achieved using the BODXL machine, one of the largest concrete 3D printing solutions on the market. It is 50 meters long, 30 meters wide, and 15 meters high. A real beast!<\/p>\n

Each school is located on a 100 meter x 100 meter plot, so the 3D printer couldn\u2019t cover the entire area in one go. The project leaders therefore had to disassemble the machine to print different sections. They repeated this process of disassembly, relocation, and reassembly 15 times.<\/p>\n

3D printing made it possible to create shapes that would have been impossible to achieve<\/strong> using traditional methods, or at least would have been too costly and time-consuming. As a result, the walls undulate<\/strong>, reminiscent of the dunes of the Qatari desert. The prints were made at night to protect the concrete from the heat. The first students should be settling in shortly and will determine whether or not this project was a success.<\/p>\n
