Initiated back in November 2025 via a presidential Executive Order, the Department of Energy\u2019s Genesis Mission connects national laboratory AI-enabled supercomputers. Leveraging this platform, a team across NNSA\u2019s National Laboratories (Los Alamos, Lawrence Livermore, and Sandia), alongside NNSA\u2019s Kansas City National Security Campus, designed, built, and tested the prototype vehicle in just five months. Normally, this process takes about two years.<\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: justify;\" data-path-to-node=\"7\">What Is Aires Tide?<\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\" data-path-to-node=\"8\">Aires Tide is an 11-foot-tall vehicle built for fast-tracked, scientific flight tests. Launched into the atmosphere, the vehicle measures the intense heat and vibrations a nuclear weapon would experience on its path to a target. AI tools were used to design the vehicle\u2019s internal shape and structure, including. They optimized the vehicle\u2019s ability to handle extreme heat and stress, and determined the precise location of internal components, such as sensors and power buses.<\/p><div class=\"dnati-inside-article-leaderboard dnati-entity-placement\" style=\"text-align: center;\" id=\"dnati-2862520047\"><div id=\"dnati-3970522695\"><a data-no-instant=\"1\" href=\"https:\/\/www.3dnatives.com\/en\/3dnatives-lab-giveaway-win-a-3d-printer\/?utm_source=website&#038;utm_medium=banner&#038;utm_campaign=flashforge_adventurer5mpro&#038;lang=en\" rel=\"noopener\" class=\"a2t-link\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"LB (EN)\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.3dnatives.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2026\/06\/LB-EN-1.gif\" alt=\"\"  width=\"850\" height=\"150\"   \/><\/a><\/div><\/div>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\" data-path-to-node=\"14\">The project reflects a broader NNSA effort to use supercomputing platforms and cutting-edge additive manufacturing technologies to shorten development cycles and improve efficiency, strengthening the enterprise\u2019s ability to respond to emerging national security challenges.<\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: justify;\" data-path-to-node=\"16\">Additive Manufacturing: 3D Printing the Aires Tide Fuselage<\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\" data-path-to-node=\"17\">Once the AI optimized the design, researchers turned to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.3dnatives.com\/en\/direct-metal-laser-sintering100420174-2\/\">laser powder bed fusion<\/a> to fabricate multiple prototype vehicles. The final version is an 11-foot-tall cone-shaped structure made of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.3dnatives.com\/en\/3d-printing-nickel-alloys-2907202501\/\"><b data-path-to-node=\"19,0,0\" data-index-in-node=\"88\">Inconel<\/b><\/a>, which is a a high-performance alloy composed of nickel, chromium, and iron. The Inconel version was printed using a LPBF process at Kansas City\u2019s New Mexico Operations, a part of Sandia\u2019s Center for Advanced Manufacturing and Innovation (which opened in February).\u00a0Earlier versions included an initial carbon fiber composite prototype printed in January, alongside smaller-scale versions printed, assembled, and tested at Sandia.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\" data-path-to-node=\"21\">The fuselage was printed on a <b data-path-to-node=\"21\" data-index-in-node=\"30\">Velo Sapphire XC 3D printer<\/b> as seven nested pieces. (Photo by Craig Fritz)<\/p><\/div>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: justify;\" data-path-to-node=\"24\">Testing, Validation, and Public Debut<\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\" data-path-to-node=\"25\">The accelerated five-month development cycle was backed by rigorous physical testing. In May, Nuclear Security Enterprise scientists conducted two successful flight tests of Aires Tide, dropping the vehicle from 32,000 feet at the U.S. Army\u2019s Dugway Proving Ground in Utah.
