We’ll admit, it’s a rather surprising concept, especially at a time when society is trying to reduce plastic consumption. But in this case, the material being used is recycled plastic. So what exactly is this new project led by the Australian company Hyperion Systems?

According to the company, it would be the first 3D-printed plastic house in the Southern Hemisphere. Hyperion Systems uses robotic additive manufacturing to produce parts for a variety of industries. With this project, the company is entering the construction sector through a partnership with Little Castles Small Homes.

The studio will feature a bathroom and an open-plan living area with a kitchen.

Hyperion Systems is behind the design of these new small homes. According to the company, the structure can be 3D-printed in just 48 hours using recycled plastic. It is then shipped to Little Castles Small Homes, where the windows and doors are installed and the house is fully completed.

The house is expected to measure 28 square meters and will include a living area with a kitchen and a bathroom. Josh Wigley, CEO of Hyperion Systems, explains:

We will use recycled polymers as our primary raw material and, thanks to the intellectual property we have developed in-house, we will be able to 3D-print the main structure of a tiny house in approximately 48 hours. Because it is made from recycled polymers, the structure will be termite-resistant and offer beneficial thermal properties.

According to the Australian company, this initiative could pave the way for other, larger-scale projects. Hyperion Systems believes additive manufacturing could help reduce construction times while enabling a reorganization of the workforce.

It remains to be seen whether these plastic homes will stand the test of time, but Little Castles Small Homes states that all construction standards comply with Australian regulations, “with particular attention paid to insulation, ventilation, and long-term performance.” While we wait to see how the project evolves, you can find more information about Hyperion Systems HERE.

What do you think of this 3D-printed plastic house?
