The company Cementos Argos just finished printing South America\u2019s first additively-manufactured <a href=\"https:\/\/www.3dnatives.com\/en\/the-role-of-construction-3d-printing-in-humanitarian-aid-080620214\/\">social housing<\/a> in La Uni\u00f3n, in Colombia\u2019s western Antioquia department. The team used COBOD&#8217;s Bod2 printer on behalf of non-profit Fundaci\u00f3n Berta Mart\u00ednez. The group had to transport the printer and materials in <strong>mountainous terrain<\/strong> and <strong>heavy rains<\/strong>. So, what are these homes like, and how was the project pulled off?<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Cementos Argos constructed two single-story houses, each with a 63-sq-m floorpan. <span style=\"font-size: 1em;\">The houses have two bedrooms, a living room, kitchen, bathroom, laundry area, and porch. Their walls are 2.2m-high, supporting a timber roof. <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 1em;\">Remarkably, these homes were <strong>printed in just 16 hours<\/strong> over the course of three days, directly on site. According to COBOD, the process is 30% faster than traditional building techniques, with 15\u201330% less waste and 20% lower material costs.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_70269\" style=\"width: 710px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-70269\" class=\"size-full wp-image-70269\" src=\"https:\/\/www.3dnatives.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2026\/04\/maddie-1-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"700\" height=\"400\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.3dnatives.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2026\/04\/maddie-1-1.jpg 700w, https:\/\/www.3dnatives.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2026\/04\/maddie-1-1-600x343.jpg 600w, https:\/\/www.3dnatives.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2026\/04\/maddie-1-1-160x91.jpg 160w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 700px) 100vw, 700px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-70269\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">COBOD&#8217;s Bod2 3D printer in operation in Columbia<\/p><\/div>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: justify;\">A Special Mortar Mixture<\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Adding to the project&#8217;s overall <a href=\"https:\/\/www.3dnatives.com\/en\/10-reasons-why-3d-printing-is-considered-sustainable-300720244\/\">sustainability<\/a>, Cementos Argos used a custom mortar mixture which contained <strong>99% locally-sourced raw materials<\/strong>. The walls\u2019 compressive strength exceeds 35 MPa (5,076 psi), and to comply with the local seismic resistance standards, the structural design had to be approved by a Municipal Planning Office.<\/p><div class=\"dnati-inside-article-leaderboard\" style=\"text-align: center;\" id=\"dnati-3010767987\"><a data-no-instant=\"1\" href=\"https:\/\/us06web.zoom.us\/webinar\/register\/3717757396787\/WN_sBfwcCHoQSq1mEANYpWa6Q\" rel=\"noopener\" class=\"a2t-link\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"LB (3)\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.3dnatives.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2026\/04\/LB-3.gif\" alt=\"\"  width=\"850\" height=\"150\"   \/><\/a><\/div>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">In an interview with<em> Global Construction Review,<\/em> <span style=\"font-size: 1em;\">Daniel Duque, R&amp;D director of Cementos Argos explained<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 1em;\">: \u201c<em>The dry mix contains fibres and chemical additives that provide resistance to plastic shrinkage stresses, preventing cracking caused by wind, humidity and temperature fluctuations in the region.\u201d<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<div class=\"paragraph-block\" style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<div class=\"block-inner core-block-inner\">\n<p>This material was tested over the course of several months to ensure that the mechanical properties and adhesion between layers was sufficient. Plus, they had to evaluate the curing process and the structural behaviour of the printed walls. These walls are also doubled, meaning that they have an intermediate air chamber which generates thermal insulation.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: justify;\">Future 3D Printed Social Housing Projects<\/h2>\n<div class=\"paragraph-block\" style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<div class=\"block-inner core-block-inner\">\n<p>The two houses built by Cementos Argos are only the beginning. For the two-house project, they used five small trucks to transport the printer. What sets this first project apart was its adaptability: <em style=\"font-size: 1em;\"><span style=\"font-size: 1em;\">\u201cThe design of this project is notable for its flexible interior layout and the potential for future lateral expansion of the house,&#8221;\u00a0<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-size: 1em;\">Duque said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>The Fundaci\u00f3n Berta Mart\u00ednez, which funded the project, has a mission of making a holistic impact on rural areas, strategically leveraging social investment and catalytic capital.
