The Korea Institute of Industrial Technology (KITECH), Korea Aerospace Research Institute (KARI), KP Aero Industries, AM Solutions, and Hanyang University have partnered on an ambitious project to advance additive manufacturing for the aerospace sector. Their goal is to produce high-pressure titanium tanks, which are essential components for launch vehicles and satellites, using <a href=\"https:\/\/www.3dnatives.com\/en\/what-is-additive-manufacturing\/\">additive manufacturing<\/a>. The team recently reached a significant milestone by successfully manufacturing and demonstrating the reliability of a fully 3D printed titanium tank, setting the stage for future innovations in spaceflight hardware.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\" data-start=\"726\" data-end=\"1410\">The goal of the project was to demonstrate the feasibility and resilience of a 3D printed space tank under realistic conditions. The resulting cryogenic tank, made of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.3dnatives.com\/en\/titanium-its-alloys-and-3d-printing-with-ti6al4v\/\">titanium<\/a>, measures 640 mm in diameter and has a capacity of 130 liters. To test its performance under extreme conditions, the tank was deep-frozen and subjected to a cryogenic pressure test \u2013 with impressive results: the test was a complete success. The tank can withstand 330 bar of internal pressure at \u2013196 \u00b0C, cooled by liquid nitrogen. This represents the world&#8217;s first successful test of a 3D printed high-pressure vessel under such extreme conditions.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_64442\" style=\"width: 710px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-64442\" class=\"wp-image-64442 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.3dnatives.com\/de\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2025\/08\/Aotm_1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"700\" height=\"400\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-64442\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The cryogenic pressure test (left) and a pressure test at room temperature (right)<\/p><\/div>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: justify;\">DED and Two Hemispheres<\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">KITECH assumed responsibility for the additive manufacturing process, using <a href=\"https:\/\/www.3dnatives.com\/en\/directed-energy-deposition-ded-3d-printing-guide-100920194\/\">DED (Directed Energy Deposition)<\/a> technology, which deposits titanium material layer by layer and simultaneously melts it. The production process involved two hemispherical titanium halves, which were welded together to form a monolithic tank after precise heat treatment and machining. Real-time monitoring enabled the precise implementation of optimized deposition paths \u2013 a key to the achieved geometric accuracy and mechanical integrity.<\/p><div class=\"dnati-inside-article-leaderboard\" style=\"text-align: center;\" id=\"dnati-3966213386\"><a data-no-instant=\"1\" href=\"https:\/\/app.swapcard.com\/login\/event\/additiv-defense-2026\/ticket\/VGlja2V0VHlwZV83MDM4MQ==\/page\/UmVnaXN0cmF0aW9uRm9ybV81NjE4Ng==\" rel=\"noopener\" class=\"a2t-link\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"LB (4)\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.3dnatives.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2026\/03\/LB-4.gif\" alt=\"\"  width=\"850\" height=\"150\"   \/><\/a><\/div>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Additive manufacturing offers significant advantages over conventional processes, particularly for titanium. Traditional production methods suffer from material shortages for molds, design constraints, and high costs. 3D printing has overcome these limitations \u2013 with advantages such as greater material efficiency, design freedom, and significant cost savings.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_64443\" style=\"width: 710px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-64443\" class=\"wp-image-64443 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.3dnatives.com\/de\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2025\/08\/Aotm_3.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"700\" height=\"400\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-64443\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The halves were manufactured using DED and finally welded together<\/p><\/div>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: justify;\">The Importance of the Titanium Tank for Space Travel<\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">High-pressure vessels are essential components in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.3dnatives.com\/en\/aerospace-and-defense-3d-printing\/\">aerospace<\/a>. They store liquid propellants and contain gases used for attitude and altitude control of spacecraft. Titanium alloys are particularly suitable due to their high strength, low weight, and stability at low temperatures \u2013 but have so far been difficult to manufacture. The project demonstrates that 3D-printed components meet these requirements.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Dr. Lee Hyup from KITECH KAMIC emphasizes:<em> \u201cThis demonstration proves that large-scale additively manufactured structures can reliably withstand cryogenic and high-pressure conditions that simulate actual operating environments.
