While zirconia and alumina are the most common on the market, another <a href=\"https:\/\/www.3dnatives.com\/en\/technical-ceramics-additive-manufacturing-011220234\/\">technical ceramic<\/a> is increasingly in the spotlight: silicon nitride, a non-oxide ceramic that offers extremely interesting thermomechanical properties. But what are the properties of silicon nitride in 3D printing? Let\u2019s take a closer look!<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\" data-start=\"677\" data-end=\"1152\" data-is-last-node=\"\" data-is-only-node=\"\">Silicon nitride (Si\u2083N\u2084) is produced by heating silicon powder in a nitrogen atmosphere. It is one of the <strong>hardest and most durable<\/strong> technical ceramics available on the market. With a low density, it exhibits <strong>good resistance to thermal shock<\/strong> as well as excellent wear and <strong>corrosion resistance<\/strong>. Silicon nitride can withstand very high heating followed by rapid cooling without cracking. First of all, material extrusion can be used\u2014more specifically, a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.3dnatives.com\/en\/10-reasons-to-use-pellets-in-3d-printing-120920244\/\">pellet-based 3D printer<\/a>. As for filament usage, manufacturers are rarer, but some thermoplastics exist, such as those from Spectrum Filaments. This process enables higher detail and precision, while also aiming for high density. After printing, however, a post-processing phase is necessary: the part must be cleaned to remove excess resin, then cured to give the final properties and densify the ceramic.
