The additive manufacturing industry has seen some turbulence over the last several months. We have seen layoffs,\u00a0Shapeways declared bankruptcy<\/a>, and Nano Dimension has announced its intention to acquire Desktop Metal<\/a>. Amidst this change, however, comes positive news: Canadian company Mosaic Manufacturing raised 28 million Canadian dollars (roughly $20.6 million USD) in a financing round led by Idealist Capital.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Mosaic Manufacturing, founded in 2014, produces additive manufacturing<\/a> tools for factory floor production. They serve industry leaders in logistics, consumer apparel, defense, education, and contract manufacturing and have shipped over 15,000 hardware products around the world. Mosaic\u2019s flagship product, Array, combines fused filament fabrication<\/a> (FFF) with patented hardware, automation, and software to deliver a comprehensive AM platform. Their products allow clients to create custom plastic parts at scale for an unprecedented price.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Mosaic’s funding will be used to expand this manufacturing platform to provide its clients with flexible, cost-efficient, and high-quality tools. Mitch Debora, CEO of Mosaic Manufacturing, said “<\/span>We’re proud to partner with our customers in building more resilient, sustainable supply chains powered by Mosaic\u2019s Array. This funding enables us to expand our impact as we deepen our presence in factories across the globe.<\/span><\/i>”\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

The investment in Mosaic also has implications for the rest of the additive manufacturing industry. When asked about what the funding means for the market, Debora said “To me, it signals a strong conviction that the next 100 \u201cInvisalign level\u201d applications are out there for the taking and that the value is not in making machines. It is in delivering full-stack solutions to deliver simpler, cleaner, and more resilient supply chains<\/em>.”<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Mosaic Manufacturing Sustainability in Practice<\/h3>\n

One of Mosaic and Idealist Capitals’ shared goals is to prioritize sustainable manufacturing processes. Additive manufacturing is considered sustainable<\/a> for several reasons. For instance, 3D printing often reduces material waste, permits products to be fabricated locally and on demand, and offers opportunities to save energy. Mosaic reported that they offer an entire ecosystem of additive manufacturing tools, harnessing \u201cautomation, a software-driven digital workflow, and additive manufacturing technology<\/em>,\u201d so their clients can localize production.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

By offering their clients the ability to produce parts when they want where they want, Mosaic’s service reduces the need to rely on traditional production methods that are resource-intensive and harmful to the environment. “In CNC machining, the waste factor is often north of 70% while on Array the waste factor is often <1%,”<\/em> Debora said. “The other case is using Array for producing locally within 1 mile instead of molding in China and shipping thousands of miles across the globe<\/em>.<\/span><\/span>“<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

As an investment firm, Idealist Capital focuses on funding transitions to clean energy and appreciates Mosaic\u2019s sustainability efforts. Fran\u00e7ois Boudreault, Partner at Idealist Capital, said \u201c<\/span>Mosaic\u2019s focus on throughput, quality, and cost-efficiency is unlocking novel applications for additive manufacturing while significantly reducing the often-overlooked waste produced by conventional manufacturing processes.\u201d<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n
