At a time when the trend is to use more environmentally-friendly raw materials in the production of everyday objects, SofiaHagen x Studio Marmi have worked together to create 3D-printed furniture from hemp. Called Hempla, this is a collection of seats dedicated to meditation. Inspired by Zen Garden principles such as harmony, naturalness and simplicity, they are made from hemp pellets and PLA. They are accompanied by a meditation mat also made from hemp and natural wool – hand-woven in Turkey.<\/p>\n

Using 3D printing to create furniture is not new. Numerous examples highlight the advantages of additive manufacturing, particularly when it comes to producing more durable, made-to-measure furniture. The Hempla collection was born of this trend. It is based on the combination of 3D technologies, the art of weaving and the use of natural materials, in this case hemp.<\/p>\n

Hempla I is made from hemp and PLA<\/p><\/div>\n

Two meditation chairs were therefore designed using 3D printing: Hempla I is a blend of hemp and PLA, while Hempla II was 3D printed from PLA and incorporates an LED light. For the first piece of furniture, the project teams transformed hemp into granules which they then mixed with PLA, a material renowned for its lower environmental impact because it is made from sugar cane. As for the other seat, the LED light adapts to the user’s heart rate. Both measure 30 x 65 x 25 cm.<\/p>

The teams explain: \u201cSustainability is at the heart of the HEMPLA philosophy. The 3D printing process used to create these seats is one of the most energy-efficient fabrication methods available today, using 50% less material than traditional methods and generating zero waste. The materials themselves are biodegradable, non-toxic, and fully recyclable, ensuring that each piece is as kind to the environment as it is to its users.\u201d <\/em><\/p>\n
