{"id":44229,"date":"2023-02-07T16:00:54","date_gmt":"2023-02-07T15:00:54","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.3dnatives.com\/en\/?p=44229"},"modified":"2023-02-08T09:59:25","modified_gmt":"2023-02-08T08:59:25","slug":"keyhole-pores-laser-powder-bed-fusion-07022023","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.3dnatives.com\/en\/keyhole-pores-laser-powder-bed-fusion-07022023\/","title":{"rendered":"Detecting Keyhole Pores in Laser Powder Bed Fusion"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Scientists from the University of Virginia, Carnegie Mellon University and the University of Wisconsin-Madison have developed a method to detect and prevent the formation of structural defects known as \u2018keyhole pores\u2019 which can result in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.3dnatives.com\/en\/3d-technologies\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">additively manufactured<\/a> parts with poor mechanical properties. With funding from the Department of Energy, the team used x-ray imaging and thermal imaging combined with multiphysics simulations to detect \u2018keyhole oscillation\u2019 in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.3dnatives.com\/en\/direct-metal-laser-sintering100420174-2\/\">laser powder bed fusion<\/a> of a titanium alloy, Ti-6Al-4V.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But what exactly are keyhole pores? Well, as you may know, laser powder bed fusion involves the melting and fusion of metal powder particles with a laser. One issue which this can cause is a keyhole pore (as shown in the cover image). These keyhole pores form due to excess laser energy input concentrated on a particular zone of the part. This causes metal vaporization to exert a recoil pressure, pushing down the melt pool surface &#8211; this being the area where the laser has melted the powder for sintering. The lowered pool forms a keyhole in which laser reflection and absorption occurs; these unstable conditions can lead to keyhole collapse, where gas bubbles form and can become pore defects when they are stuck in the material by the solid layers. They used this information to build a machine-learning model which uses thermal imaging to detect these keyholes. They believe these results to be very applicable to industry 3D printing. Sun confirmed, <em>&#8220;Our approach provides a viable solution for high-fidelity, high-resolution detection of keyhole pore generation that can be readily applied in many Additive Manufacturing scenarios.&#8221;\u00a0<\/em><\/span><\/p><div class=\"dnati-inside-article-leaderboard\" style=\"text-align: center;\" id=\"dnati-1345259497\"><a data-no-instant=\"1\" href=\"https:\/\/app.swapcard.com\/login\/event\/additiv-defense-2026\/ticket\/VGlja2V0VHlwZV83MDM4MQ==\/page\/UmVnaXN0cmF0aW9uRm9ybV81NjE4Ng==\" rel=\"noopener\" class=\"a2t-link\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"LB\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.3dnatives.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2026\/03\/LB.gif\" alt=\"\"  width=\"850\" height=\"150\"   \/><\/a><\/div>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Interestingly in this project, the team did not only use physical experimental methods. They utilized <a href=\"https:\/\/www.3dnatives.com\/en\/machine-learning-artificial-intelligence-additive-manufacturing-271220214\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">machine learning<\/a>. According to them, the analysis of oscillation behaviors is \u2018<em>generic and practical<\/em>\u2019, meaning it is not exclusive to certain projects only. Engineers could use analysis to prevent keyhole pores, thus making parts with better structural and mechanical properties with a lower risk of failure.
