{"id":33952,"date":"2021-10-27T16:00:44","date_gmt":"2021-10-27T16:00:44","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.3dnatives.com\/en\/?p=33952"},"modified":"2024-07-05T09:39:42","modified_gmt":"2024-07-05T07:39:42","slug":"metal-3d-printing-food-industry-271020216","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.3dnatives.com\/en\/metal-3d-printing-food-industry-271020216\/","title":{"rendered":"Metal 3D Printing in the Food Industry"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\"><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\">The Swiss B\u00fchler group specializes in the mechanical industry, particularly in the manufacture of machines for the food industry. <\/span><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\">In 2018, the company joined forces with <\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\"><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\">Haas-<\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\"><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\">Meincke, a Danish machine manufacturer that produces cakes and cookies of all kinds. <\/span><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\">Some of the company&#8217;s machines are equipped with metal 3D-printed nozzles, offering more freedom in terms of design, complexity, and flexibility. <\/span><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\">The nozzles are made with metals compatible with food contact by the Danish Technological Institute, which is equipped with four <a href=\"https:\/\/www.3dnatives.com\/en\/metal-3d-printer-manufacturers\/\">metal 3D printers<\/a>. <\/span><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\">Today, the Danish branch has gone further in its projects and uses <\/span><\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.3dnatives.com\/en\/the-metal-3d-printing-guide\/\"><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\"><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\">metal additive manufacturing<\/span><\/span><\/a><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\"><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\"> in the production of finished parts.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\"><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\">When we think of <\/span><\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.3dnatives.com\/en\/3d-printing-food-a-new-revolution-in-cooking\/\"><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\"><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\">3D printing in the food sector<\/span><\/span><\/a><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\"><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\">, we tend to imagine these small desktop FDM machines, capable of extruding dough or chocolate to design an original dish. <\/span><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\">And, there&#8217;s a healthy bit of hesitancy in the consumer market when it comes to eating 3D-printed. <\/span><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\">It is for this reason that we suggest that you move away from this concept and look at the food industry through another lens, in particular the \u201cbehind-the-scenes\u201d of cookie production.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_66634\" style=\"width: 710px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-66634\" class=\"size-full wp-image-66634\" src=\"https:\/\/www.3dnatives.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/buse.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"700\" height=\"400\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-66634\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\"><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\">B\u00fchler Meincke makes machines that produce cookies (Photo Credit: B\u00fchler Meincke)<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p><\/div>\n<h3><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\"><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\">The Choice of Metal Additive Manufacturing<\/span><\/span><\/h3>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\"><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\">B\u00fchler&#8217;s machines that make cookies today are equipped with nozzles from which the dough is extruded, just like the nozzle of an FDM 3D printer from which the <\/span><\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.3dnatives.com\/en\/which-filament-should-i-choose-for-my-3d-printer-070620214\/\"><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\"><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\">plastic filament<\/span><\/span><\/a><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\"><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\"> comes out<\/span><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\">. <\/span><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\">These nozzles have specific shapes depending on the imagined cakes. <\/span><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\">To manufacture them, B\u00fchler went through manufacturing in several parts, assembled via a welding step thereafter; <\/span><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\">the shapes were too complex to be obtained by a milling process. <\/span><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\">However, the assembly phase adds additional constraints: by welding, we obtain joints in which bacteria can accumulate. <\/span><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\">A hell of a limit in the food sector.<\/span><\/span><\/p><div class=\"dnati-inside-article-leaderboard\" style=\"text-align: center;\" id=\"dnati-1724903195\"><a data-no-instant=\"1\" href=\"https:\/\/app.swapcard.com\/login\/event\/additiv-defense-2026\/ticket\/VGlja2V0VHlwZV83MDM4MQ==\/page\/UmVnaXN0cmF0aW9uRm9ybV81NjE4Ng==\" rel=\"noopener\" class=\"a2t-link\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"LB (4)\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.3dnatives.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2026\/03\/LB-4.gif\" alt=\"\"  width=\"850\" height=\"150\"   \/><\/a><\/div>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\"><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\">In 2017, the group discovered plastic 3D printing and circumvented many of the constraints it previously knew. <\/span><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\">Quickly, B\u00fchler moved towards metal additive manufacturing because of the <\/span><\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.3dnatives.com\/en\/3d-printing-metals110420174\/\"><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\"><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\">materials offered<\/span><\/span><\/a><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\"><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\">, the repeatability and speed offered, as well as the complexity of the design. <\/span><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\">Today the nozzles of its machines are 3D printed with titanium Ti6A and stainless steel 316L, two metals <\/span><\/span><strong><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\"><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\">compatible with food contact<\/span><\/span><\/strong><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\"><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\">. <\/span><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\">It was also a necessity for the Danish group. <\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\"><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\">Kennie Larsen, Head of Biscuit Feeding and Forming at B\u00fchler Meincke, adds: &#8220;<\/span><\/span><em><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\"><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\">Thanks to the design freedom offered by 3D printing, we were able to solve some of the problems with organic and hygienic design, as we can now get rid of the joints and angles of traditional manufacturing. <\/span><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\">The actual production of nozzles was previously a complex matter; <\/span><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\">this is no longer the case with 3D printing<\/span><\/span><\/em><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\"><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\">. &#8220;<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"YouTube video player\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/z5jnCCkEN3Y\" width=\"700\" height=\"400\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><span data-mce-type=\"bookmark\" style=\"display: inline-block; width: 0px; overflow: hidden; line-height: 0;\" class=\"mce_SELRES_start\">\ufeff<\/span><\/iframe><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\"><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\">B\u00fchler Meincke&#8217;s Future Projects<\/span><\/span><\/h3>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The business didn&#8217;t stop at cookie machine nozzles; it optimized other parts such as the die roll. Kennie Larsen explains: <em>&#8220;This roller used to be a tube to weld buckets to cut the dough. When we weld, we have a lot of heat that is released and therefore parts that are deformed. By going through additive manufacturing, we are able to overcome these problems.&#8221;<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">One thing is certain, metal additive manufacturing allows the company to reduce production times while enjoying great design freedom. The company can now quickly test a prototype, validate a design, and print the same part for final production. B\u00fchler Meincke points out, however, that the technology has its limits, particularly in terms of volume: the company would like to be able to design larger batches.
