Applying the benefits of 3D printing to his clarinet expertise, Ryan Pereira launched Pereira 3D in 2014 with the creation of his first after-market clarinet barrel. Using <a href=\"https:\/\/www.3dnatives.com\/en\/top-15-3d-printing-music210620174\/\">3D printing in their clarinet<\/a> products allowed for lower manufacturing costs, resulting in significantly more affordable products, including Pietera 3D&#8217;s <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Balance<\/span><\/i> <i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Barrels<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> which are designed for students and cost only $50 relative to comparable barrels <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">which cost upwards of $200-$300.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In general, when one plays the clarinet, different barrels can produce different sounds that have their advantages and disadvantages \u2014 barrels can create sounds that are somber or whimsical, more or less focused, or change the blowing resistance of your clarinet. Furthermore, with usage, clarinet accessories become worn and require frequent replacement to produce optimal sounds. Using biocompatible <a href=\"https:\/\/www.3dnatives.com\/en\/wood-ultrastructure-3d-printing-050820194\/\">3D Wood<\/a> materials, such as Blackwood and Mahogany that are currently available in abundance, Pereira 3D makes the case for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.3dnatives.com\/en\/3d-printing-sustainability-220420194\/\">sustainability<\/a> in producing clarinet replacement parts and repairs. He later turned to 3D printing in order to enhance barrel precision and customization. Pereira, a classically-trained clarinet player, deepened his expertise after spending four years as a clarinet repair apprentice, where he experimented with the different aspects of clarinet performance including testing clarinet bumper materials, barrel tapers, and beveling clarinet cork pads. <\/span><\/p><div class=\"dnati-inside-article-leaderboard\" style=\"text-align: center;\" id=\"dnati-3292086223\"><a data-no-instant=\"1\" href=\"https:\/\/app.swapcard.com\/login\/event\/additiv-defense-2026\/ticket\/VGlja2V0VHlwZV83MDM4MQ==\/page\/UmVnaXN0cmF0aW9uRm9ybV81NjE4Ng==\" rel=\"noopener\" class=\"a2t-link\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"LB\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.3dnatives.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2026\/03\/LB.gif\" alt=\"\"  width=\"850\" height=\"150\"   \/><\/a><\/div>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">From there, Pereira expanded to a full range of products using new materials, including <a href=\"https:\/\/www.3dnatives.com\/en\/forust-140520215\/\">3D printed wood<\/a> that promises to never crack, never change its dimensions, and doesn\u2019t require the typical clarinet break-in process. The Pereira 3D workshop is equipped with two FDM machines \u2014 the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.3dnatives.com\/en\/3dnatives-lab-test-zortrax-m200\/\">Zortrax M200<\/a> and Zortrax M300 Dual 3D printers. (Photo Credits: Pereira3D)<\/p><\/div>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: justify;\">Music Education<\/h3>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Additionally, research funded by the National Association of Music Merchants (NAMM) Foundation\u2019s <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sounds of Learning <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">research initiative, estimates the cost for music education averages to about $187 per student annually in a sample school district in the United States. John Gerdy, founder and CEO of the nonprofit <a href=\"https:\/\/www.k12dive.com\/news\/music-education-can-have-tremendous-payoff-despite-high-costs\/540249\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Music for Everyone<\/a>, which supports music education in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania, shared that the nonprofit&#8217;s instrument repair program awarded $112,000 in grants in the spring of 2018. However, the group received $250,000 worth of requests. Applying 3D printing to instruments like the clarinet can open more opportunities for students interested in music education but are restricted due to costs.
