{"id":29898,"date":"2021-05-21T14:00:31","date_gmt":"2021-05-21T14:00:31","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.3dnatives.com\/en\/?p=29898"},"modified":"2021-05-20T09:47:24","modified_gmt":"2021-05-20T09:47:24","slug":"nc-state-develop-new-homocomposite-hydrogel-210520215","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.3dnatives.com\/en\/nc-state-develop-new-homocomposite-hydrogel-210520215\/","title":{"rendered":"NC State Researchers Develop Novel 3D Printable Jelly"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Over the years, researchers have combined 3D printing and hydrogels for a variety of different innovative projects including a<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.3dnatives.com\/en\/3d-printed-human-heart-model-251120205\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> lifelike model of a human heart<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.3dnatives.com\/en\/3d-bioprinting-cancer-treatment-270720205\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">cancer treatment<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.3dnatives.com\/en\/3d-printed-smart-gel-110120216\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">artificial muscle tissue<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> able to adapt its color and shape according to light, and even <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.3dnatives.com\/en\/fast-hydrogel-stereolithography-printing-080320215\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">biocompatible hydrogel models<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Now, a team of researchers from North Carolina (NC) State University has combined two physical forms of the same seaweed material to create a homocomposite hydrogel with improved and highly controlled properties. According to the university this method could have applications in biomedical materials. For example, soft robotics, biological scaffolds for growing cells, strengthened 3D-printed bandages or even patches for wound healing or drug delivery.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Hydrogels are 3D printable, water-based substances resembling jelly. Typically, they are composed of chemical compounds found in seaweed and algae, often used as thickening agents and in wound dressings, called alginates. Hydrogels are a distinctly useful material for the reason that they are, at once, both strong and flexible. The possession of both these qualities is possible, as Orlin Velev, S. (Photo Credit: NC State University)<\/p><\/div>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">However, the hydrogels developed by NC State were created by merging micro- and nano-sized networks of the same materials harnessed from seaweed and are thus homocomposite materials. They are therefore distinct from typical hydrogels for the reason that they being <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201csoft fibrillar alginate particles inside a medium of alginate \u2013 are really two hydrogels in one: one is a particle hydrogel and one is a molecular hydrogel. Merged together they produce a jelly-like material that is better than the sum of its parts, and whose properties can be tuned precisely for shaping through a 3D printer for on-demand manufacturing.\u201d<\/span><\/i><\/p><div class=\"dnati-inside-article-leaderboard\" style=\"text-align: center;\" id=\"dnati-3222771488\"><a data-no-instant=\"1\" href=\"https:\/\/app.swapcard.com\/login\/event\/additiv-defense-2026\/ticket\/VGlja2V0VHlwZV83MDM4MQ==\/page\/UmVnaXN0cmF0aW9uRm9ybV81NjE4Ng==\" rel=\"noopener\" class=\"a2t-link\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"LB (4)\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.3dnatives.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2026\/03\/LB-4.gif\" alt=\"\"  width=\"850\" height=\"150\"   \/><\/a><\/div>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to the team, they were able to eradicate the fragility that can occur when merging differing materials in hydrogel, by merging different-size scale networks of the same alginate instead. <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cWe are reinforcing a hydrogel material with the same material, which is remarkable because it uses just one material to improve the overall mechanical properties,\u201d<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> commented Lilian Hsiao, an assistant professor of chemical and molecular engineering at NC State and a co-author of the paper.
