In order to do this, they created an open-source 3D printed device that \u201cbreathes\u201d like a lung. By making this device inhale smoke as a lung would, the team were able able to observe the consequences. This device is an in vitro exposure system (IVES), which could raise questions about the legalization of drugs for therapeutic purposes.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Additive manufacturing and cannabis are not a new duo in the sector. Many researchers and companies are indeed interested in this plant- within a medical context, of course. Cannabis is rich in hemp, which can in turn be exploited for its medicinal properties. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.3dnatives.com\/en\/syqe-medical-200220194\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Syqe Medical,<\/a> for example, developed a medical cannabis inhaler using 3D technologies to ensure better dosage. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.3dnatives.com\/en\/hemp-3d-printer-filament-sustainable-alternative-200920184\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Hemp<\/a> is also sometimes used in composite 3D printing materials, usually blended with PLA.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_61539\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\" style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<div id=\"attachment_61539\" style=\"width: 710px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-61539\" class=\"wp-image-61539 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.3dnatives.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/cannabs.jpg\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 700px) 100vw, 700px\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.3dnatives.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/cannabs.jpg 700w, https:\/\/www.3dnatives.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/cannabs-600x343.jpg 600w, https:\/\/www.3dnatives.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/cannabs-160x91.jpg 160w\" alt=\"3D printing cannabis\" width=\"700\" height=\"400\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-61539\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-61539\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The system devised by the researchers.<\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">This time around, the team of researchers in question sought to understand the impact of cannabis use on our epithelial cells. Present in all our organs, these act as protective walls to protect the body from all outside germs. Scientists say they have developed a IVES with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.3dnatives.com\/3D-compare\/formlabs\">Formlabs<\/a>&#8216; Form 2 3D printer. This device has 4 exposure chambers, with two inlets, four outlets and four plugs. The principle seems relatively simple: the system inhales smoke through one of the inlets, distributes it in the 4 chambers loaded with epithelial cells, and comes out. The researchers explain that they modeled their system using Autodesk Inventor software and printed it with Formlabs clear resin.<\/p><div class=\"dnati-inside-article-leaderboard\" style=\"text-align: center;\" id=\"dnati-1867411193\"><a data-no-instant=\"1\" href=\"https:\/\/us06web.zoom.us\/webinar\/register\/3717757396787\/WN_sBfwcCHoQSq1mEANYpWa6Q\" rel=\"noopener\" class=\"a2t-link\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"LB (3)\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.3dnatives.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2026\/04\/LB-3.gif\" alt=\"\"  width=\"850\" height=\"150\"   \/><\/a><\/div>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">After performing several tests, the team realized that the autoimmune function of the epithelial cells exposed to the smoke was damaged. Scientific research has shown that the lack of this barrier in the body can cause serious respiratory problems in humans. Obviously, we suspected the potential harmful effects of smoking cannabis, but this 3D printed device offers a more concrete depiction of the consequences. Today, the existing in vitro test models are often expensive and unreliable as they lack precision.
