No matter how much force the musician uses to smash it against the ground, it should not break. Guitar smashing, which began to appear on stage in the 1960s, is an integral part of the artists&#8217; show and is an iconic image of rock &amp; roll. Imagine a guitar that can&#8217;t break despite trying: this would be surprising on stage to say the least! This is the idea behind Sandvik&#8217;s project that used additive manufacturing to design an unsmashable guitar.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\" style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span class=\"s1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.3dnatives.com\/en\/top-15-3d-printing-music210620174\/\">3D printing and music<\/a> go hand in hand: new technologies are nowadays used in the design of original instruments, pushing the limits in terms of design, but also creating more <a href=\"https:\/\/www.3dnatives.com\/en\/deeptime-150320194\/\">powerful speakers<\/a> and all types of accessories.<\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_13194\" style=\"width: 710px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-13194\" class=\"size-full wp-image-13194\" src=\"https:\/\/www.3dnatives.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/guitar-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"700\" height=\"400\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.3dnatives.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/guitar-1.jpg 700w, https:\/\/www.3dnatives.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/guitar-1-300x171.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.3dnatives.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/guitar-1-160x91.jpg 160w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 700px) 100vw, 700px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-13194\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Credits: Sanvik<\/p><\/div>\n<p class=\"p1\" style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span class=\"s1\">The unbreakable 3D printed guitar was designed by Swedish guitarist Yngwie Malmsteen and then carried by Henrik Loikkanen, machining process developer at Sandvik Coromant, who also plays the guitar. He adds: &#8220;<em>We had to design a guitar that is unsmashable in all the different ways you can smash a guitar. The engineering challenge was that critical joint between the neck and the body that usually cracks on a guitar.<\/em>&#8221; To overcome this problem, Sandvik&#8217;s engineers explain that they eliminated the joint between the neck and body. Instead the neck and fretboard of the guitar were milled together from solid bars of recycled stainless steel. The two parts then extended into a kind of rectangular knot, penetrating deeply into the guitar body.<\/span><\/p><div class=\"dnati-inside-article-leaderboard\" style=\"text-align: center;\" id=\"dnati-1530763722\"><a data-no-instant=\"1\" href=\"https:\/\/us06web.zoom.us\/webinar\/register\/3717757396787\/WN_sBfwcCHoQSq1mEANYpWa6Q\" rel=\"noopener\" class=\"a2t-link\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"LB (3)\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.3dnatives.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2026\/04\/LB-3.gif\" alt=\"\"  width=\"850\" height=\"150\"   \/><\/a><\/div>\n<p class=\"p1\" style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span class=\"s1\">A manufacturing process that required engineers to perform numerous checks: they had to ensure that the neck and frets would not break on impact &#8211; the team says that these types of long, slender components are more susceptible to distortion. Sandvik therefore used metal additive manufacturing, including powder bed fusion technology, to design the case from titanium powder. After many attempts, the musician could not break the guitar! He even said: &#8220;<em>This guitar is a beast! <\/em><\/span><span class=\"s3\"><em>The result is amazing.
