{"id":11178,"date":"2019-01-24T00:30:46","date_gmt":"2019-01-24T00:30:46","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.3dnatives.com\/en\/?p=11178"},"modified":"2019-01-14T10:55:15","modified_gmt":"2019-01-14T10:55:15","slug":"3d-printed-bone-implants-plasma-injection-240120194","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.3dnatives.com\/en\/3d-printed-bone-implants-plasma-injection-240120194\/","title":{"rendered":"3D printed bone implants thanks to plasma injection"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Researchers at the German Fraunhofer Institute has announced a new technique for the development of 3D printed bone implants.\u00a0It involves injecting plasma into the implant, thereby promoting cell growth inside and outside the implant which should allow the natural recovery of the bone.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The link between\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.3dnatives.com\/en\/medical-3d-printing170720184\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">additive manufacturing and medicine<\/a>\u00a0has for some time been quite solid, with many applications developing and particularly around bio-printing.\u00a0Research at\u00a0the University of Arizona are\u00a0working on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.3dnatives.com\/en\/3d-printing-bone-treat-fractures-170120194\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">3D printing to better treat fractures<\/a>.\u00a0Through stem cells and 3D technologies scientists involved want to find a more effective way to treat these injuries.\u00a0This time, German researchers are interested in plasma and additive manufacturing, also with the aim of healing a defective bone.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_41689\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\">\n<div id=\"attachment_41689\" style=\"width: 710px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-41689\" class=\"wp-image-41689 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.3dnatives.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/bone-1.jpg\" alt=\"3D printed bone implants\" width=\"700\" height=\"450\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-41689\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Scaffolding printed in 3D by the University of Arizona<\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<h3>How to develop 3D printed bone implants?<\/h3>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">To create these 3D printed bone implants, a cold plasma jet is injected between each layer of copolymer. Thus forming the structure of the implant which is actually a scaffold that will dissolve over time.\u00a0This plasma jet makes it possible to place aminopenicillins which are antibiotics with bone diffusion.\u00a0These then come to mix with the 3D printed structure, forcing the bone cells to find a suitable substrate for their adhesion.<\/p><div class=\"dnati-inside-article-leaderboard\" style=\"text-align: center;\" id=\"dnati-3857662909\"><a data-no-instant=\"1\" href=\"https:\/\/us06web.zoom.us\/webinar\/register\/3717757396787\/WN_sBfwcCHoQSq1mEANYpWa6Q\" rel=\"noopener\" class=\"a2t-link\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"LB (3)\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.3dnatives.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2026\/04\/LB-3.gif\" alt=\"\"  width=\"850\" height=\"150\"   \/><\/a><\/div>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The researchers say that the implant is molded directly into the patient&#8217;s bone and does not require any chemical treatment, thus respecting its stability.\u00a0The design of each implant is personalized and allows a perfect fit for every need.\u00a0&#8220;<em>Our goal is for the bone cells to grow into the synthetic structure as quickly as possible and finally replacing the implant which is broken down gradually by the body\u2019s own enzymes,<\/em>&#8221; said Dr. Jochen Borris, Head of the Life Science and Ecology business unit at Fraunhofer IST.<\/p>\n<div id=\"wordpress-334915aada6fe3680dd9929a086a5876\"><\/div>\n<div id=\"attachment_41687\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\">\n<div id=\"attachment_41687\" style=\"width: 710px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-41687\" class=\"wp-image-41687 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.3dnatives.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/Article_BoneImplants2.jpg\" alt=\"3D printed bone implants\" width=\"700\" height=\"400\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-41687\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Bone implant manufacturing technique<\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">After placing 3D bone implants, doctors can control the density of 3D printed media and the filling of each.\u00a0Those that are sealed give greater stability to each of the implants.\u00a0Dr Thomas Neubert, Project Manager for the EU at Fraunhofer IST concludes: &#8220;<em>Like natural bones, implants can now have areas with different strengths,<\/em>&#8220;<\/p>\n<h3>What are the next steps ?<\/h3>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">According to the Institute, the project is still in the development phase. Since it is still in the laboratory test phase, the next step is to evolve the technique and its application uses.\u00a0&#8220;<em>The innovative technique offers a lot of potential for adapting bone implants very precisely to the individual needs of patients. With our method, we\u2019re able to control the shape, porosity, mechanical stability and biomechanical characteristics well and vary them within the implants.
