Don\u2019t forget to check out all our scanner tests <a href=\"\/en\/3d-printers-tests\/\">here<\/a>, and to give us any comments, tips or feedback that you have!<\/p>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: justify;\">Unpacking<\/h3>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">To start things off, we begin by unpacking the scanner. Right away, we found an\u00a0array of items that it was packaged with, which are as follows:<\/p>\n<ul style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<li>The digitizer tucked between two blocks of foam for protection<\/li>\n<li>A regulator for the calibration of the scanner<\/li>\n<li>A power supply (for our friends in Europe, there is no European plug. Your dealer should add the suitable cord if they are aware of where you are in the world)<\/li>\n<li>A USB connection cable (A classic USB printer cable)<\/li>\n<li>A user manual<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<div id=\"attachment_1069\" style=\"width: 630px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1069\" class=\"wp-image-1069 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.3dnatives.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/image-1-10.jpg\" alt=\"Digitizer 3D Scanner\" width=\"620\" height=\"330\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-1069\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The Digitizer&#8217;s careful packaging<\/p><\/div>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: justify;\">Functioning<\/h3>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The Digitizer 3D Scanner creates a 3D model of a physical object by taking a quick sequence of photos while the object rotates on a turntable. To accomplish\u00a0this:<\/p><div class=\"dnati-inside-article-leaderboard\" style=\"text-align: center;\" id=\"dnati-17427769\"><a data-no-instant=\"1\" href=\"https:\/\/app.swapcard.com\/login\/event\/additiv-defense-2026\/ticket\/VGlja2V0VHlwZV83MDM4MQ==\/page\/UmVnaXN0cmF0aW9uRm9ybV81NjE4Ng==\" rel=\"noopener\" class=\"a2t-link\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"LB\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.3dnatives.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2026\/03\/LB.gif\" alt=\"\"  width=\"850\" height=\"150\"   \/><\/a><\/div>\n<ol style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<li>The scanner has two lasers that are mounted on the left and right corner of the Digitizer that allows it to perform a linear scan that determines the profile of the object. The camera will then take a series of photographs of the object<\/li>\n<li>MakerWare software for Digitizer combines the photographs and the linear scan to create a scatter plot.<\/li>\n<li>Once the scan is complete, the MakerWare software will then generate a 3D mesh from the collected data. It is important to follow the following 2 points:<\/p>\n<ol style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<li>Brightly illuminate the scanner tray by using a light source, such as a desk lamp for example. The light source must not be visible to\u00a0the camera in order to no disrupt it. Good brightness is paramount and is directly related to the quality of your scan.<\/li>\n<li>Place the Digitizer at about 20 cm from a uniformly colored wall. The laser pointers will be pointed towards the wall, giving you better results.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Next, install the latest version of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.makerbot.com\/download-print\/\">MakerWare software<\/a>. Once MakerWare has been launched, you will need to turn on your scanner and connect it. After\u00a0scanning, which lasts 9 minutes regardless of the size of the object, the scatter plot was created.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Once the first scan is complete, you are able to see the imperfections that can occur when scanning objects with\u00a0sharp edges or hollow parts. When this happens, you may need to do a new scan with new\u00a0positioning of the object at another angle. In the MakerWare version 2.4 (which we used), it was possible to do by\u00a0clicking on the \u201cMultiscan\u201d option.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Video of our digitization of our Sphinx model:<\/p>\n<p>https:\/\/youtu.be\/ojGGkzfK_Kc<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Thanks to this option, it was\u00a0possible to generate several models that we could\u00a0merge together over time. After 3 scans of our Sphinx, the space between the legs and the sharp angles were all perfectly digitize, which was not the case after just one single scan. If you want to digitize\u00a0more than 5 times with one object, we would advise against it, as it\u00a0will give you worse results than ones that show improvement. This is because the state of the surface will depreciate. Typically, be sure to scan:<\/p>\n<ul style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<li>An object whose\u00a0dimensions are greater than that\u00a0of a cylinder (50 x 50 mm)<\/li>\n<li>An object\u00a0whose dimensions are smaller\u00a0than that\u00a0of a cylinder (203 x 203 mm)<\/li>\n<li>Objects who weigh less than 3 kg<\/li>\n<li>Stable objects<\/li>\n<li>Opaque objects<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">On the opposite side, avoid scanning:<\/p>\n<ul style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<li>Transparent objects<\/li>\n<li>Shiny or reflective objects<\/li>\n<li>Very dark objects<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">If you still want to scan a transparent object, a tip would be to paint or powder the object\u00a0to get a better capture. Also, recalibration of the Digitizer is advised after every 20 scans.
