This would be able to identify the machine at the origin of a particular 3D printed piece. The system is called PrinTracker, its primary goal is to help law enforcement reduce the illegal use of 3D printers in areas such as when\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.3dnatives.com\/en\/3d-printed-guns-legalised180720184\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">designing firearms<\/a>. It&#8217;s a\u00a0system that also could strengthen the place of intellectual property in this market.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">3D printing is a manufacturing method with innovative applications;\u00a0however, it raises some questions about the control of\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.3dnatives.com\/en\/3d-printing-intellectual-property-301020174\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">intellectual property<\/a>.\u00a0We indeed see counterfeits developed do to 3D printers, and copyright violations.\u00a0PrinTracker could join already existing solutions to counter this problem.\u00a0One example is the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.3dnatives.com\/en\/qr-codes-avoid-piracy-in-3d-printing-secure-3d-print-231020184\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">QR code<\/a>\u00a0developed, which allows for the integration of QR codes hiden within the model to avoid duplication.\u00a0Although still under development, these solutions are good news for data protecting and IP rights in the 3D printing industry.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_40600\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\">\n<div id=\"attachment_40600\" style=\"width: 709px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-40600\" class=\"wp-image-40600 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.3dnatives.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/printracker2.jpg\" alt=\"printracker\" width=\"699\" height=\"178\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-40600\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The steps of the process<\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<h3>PrinTracker, a system for identifying 3D printers<\/h3>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The researchers who developed the PrinTracker system explain that it is able to recognize the 3D printer at the origin of the part according to the unique way in which it deposits the material.\u00a0However, they raise a limit by saying that it requires a database to check what is being advanced, much like the Automated Fingerprint File system.<\/p><div class=\"dnati-inside-article-leaderboard\" style=\"text-align: center;\" id=\"dnati-4189954172\"><a data-no-instant=\"1\" href=\"https:\/\/us06web.zoom.us\/webinar\/register\/3717757396787\/WN_sBfwcCHoQSq1mEANYpWa6Q\" rel=\"noopener\" class=\"a2t-link\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"LB (3)\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.3dnatives.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2026\/04\/LB-3.gif\" alt=\"\"  width=\"850\" height=\"150\"   \/><\/a><\/div>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The team assumed that each machine is unique. Even if two 3D printers of the same brand are manufactured in the same way.\u00a0Wenyao Xu, professor of computer science and engineering at the University of Buffalo explains, &#8220;<em>3D printers are built to be the same.<\/em> But there are slight variations in their hardware created during the manufacturing process that lead to unique, inevitable and unchangeable patterns in every object they print<em>.<\/em>&#8220;<\/p>\n<div id=\"wordpress-46c6186466abce23b1976721c472f9dc\"><\/div>\n<div id=\"attachment_40599\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\">\n<div id=\"attachment_40599\" style=\"width: 710px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-40599\" class=\"wp-image-40599 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.3dnatives.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/printracker1.jpg\" alt=\"printracker\" width=\"700\" height=\"400\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-40599\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">PrinTracker would identify 3D printers in the same way that fingerprints can be identified<\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<h3>Encouraging results despite some obvious limitations<\/h3>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The researchers also realised that the precision in terms of filling 3D printed objects varied between 5 and 10% compared to the initial file.\u00a0They analysed these variations by studying each layer on each machine. From this they obtained a fingerprint database that correspond to a particular 3D printer.\u00a0They have tested 14 3D printers for now including 3\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.3dnatives.com\/en\/3D-compare\/imprimante\/ultimaker-2-go\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Ultimaker 2GB<\/a>, 2 MakerBot Replicator 2X, 2\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.3dnatives.com\/en\/3D-compare\/imprimante\/da-vinci-mini\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Da Vinci Mini Maker XYZprinting<\/a>\u00a0but also 4 Formlabs Form 1+.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Each of these 3D printers has printed a set of five keys.\u00a0These were scanned 50 times and the images obtained were integrated into an algorithm. This to identify the signature of each machine.\u00a0Researchers say PrinTracker has linked the key to 3D printers with a 99.8% success rate.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_40601\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\">\n<div id=\"attachment_40601\" style=\"width: 710px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-40601\" class=\"wp-image-40601 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.3dnatives.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/printracker3.jpg\" alt=\"printracker\" width=\"700\" height=\"400\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-40601\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">PrinTracker could for example identify 3D machines that produce illegal firearms<\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>Of course, PrinTracker remains inefficient for the time being.
