Construction in 3D printing just seems to continue to grow! In recent news, Printed Farms and COBOD have announced that they have completed what they claim is the largest 3D printed building in the world and located in Florida. With a total floor area of more than 10,100 sq ft or about 940 m2, the structure is apparently nearly 50% larger than the previous record-holder in the Middle East, another hot bed for AM in construction. Not to mention, this latest building has even been built to address concerns such as storms and heat in the state.

Indeed, Printed Farms is no stranger to 3D printing in construction in Florida. In fact, the company actually created the first 3D printed house in Tallahassee, the state capital, all the way back in 2021. Similarly, COBOD is well-known not just for its concrete 3D printed solutions, notably the BOD2, but also for a number of impressive completed 3D printed construction projects. Among them, the tallest 3D printed building in the world which measures 33 ft or 9.9 m. Now they can add this largest 3D printed building, a luxury horse barn in Wellington, Florida. Thus continuing their impressive feats in the sector and showing the increased use of AM overall.

As mentioned, the structure is in fact a luxury horse barn with a total floor area of 10,105 square feet or 939 square meters. This is thanks especially to the building’s length, 155 ft (47 m). Additionally, it has a width of 83 ft (25 m) and a height of 14 ft (4 m). Though its height makes it far from the tallest, its total floor area dwarfs many other projects, many of which are necessarily smaller to correspond with the building dimensions of the printer.

Moreover, the building was constructed especially to withstand extreme local weather conditions, among them hurricanes and tropical storms. Considering the fact Florida is considered to be the most hurricane-prone state in the country, with 125 hurricanes hitting it since 1851 including 40 “major” ones, this is important. It also helps to address increasing claims about the perceived safety of 3D printing construction, providing a solution at least in this regard. Furthermore, design of the building takes into consideration the extreme heat in the state. The structure’s 3D printed walls create a cavity and air gap, allowing for natural cooling throughout the structure. Showing the interesting geometries that can be accomplished with the technology.

Philip Lund-Nielsen, COBOD co-founder and Head of Americas concluded, “Printed Farms has done a remarkable job in completing this massive structure and the project demonstrates again how 3D printing is transforming the construction industry for the better. COBOD is proud to be technology supplier to yet another record-breaking 3D printing project on US soil which comes only shortly after the completion of the US’ first 2-story 3D printed building in Texas, also using our BOD2 3D printer.” You can find out more on COBOD’s website HERE or in the video below:
