Top 5 Videos: Utilizing the Wind With 3D Printing

Published on October 8, 2023 by Michael M.

Happy Sunday one and all! Welcome to another top five videos segment where we bring you the most interesting videos from this week in the world of 3D printing! This week, we look at some fascinating projects including your own 3D printed ‘wind wall’ parts, engines for above-ground and under the sea, and our little plug as the 3D Explained series comes out with a new video on the different types of 3D printing resins! So, please sit back and relax, crack open a fresh filament spool, and get ready to print the night away as we set sail on a video odyssey!

Top 1: 3D Printing Ugrinsky Wind Wall Modules

You may or may not have heard of wind walls. They are small constructions that can harness the power of the errant breeze that blows through our backyards and gardens every day. In this video, Robert Murray-Smith takes a look at one of his favorite models of wind wall blades, the Ugrinsky. Follow along as he takes on the project of 3D printing and building his own wind wall made from these components. He talks you through the process and each of the components used in his construction, so that those who are curious may be able to follow along at home and give it a try themselves! In the final test, he tries to see how much electricity he can generate from a single column of wind blades and the results might be enough to get those sitting on the fence to give it a try!

Top 2: The Continuing Saga of the 3D Printed Gas Engine

At the beginning of September, we last saw Camden Bowden as he was putting together a larger gas engine. He brought a detailed look into the construction and engineering behind his 3D printed creation and took the time to explain each step to the audience as he progressed. In the end, he wasn’t able to get it fully started for more than a few seconds, however today, he’s back with a new video and more additions to his continuing project! So follow along again for an equally educational and entertaining video that makes you invested in this project that I fully hope concludes with a fully 3D printed vehicle someday.

Top 3: 3D Explained: Polymers

Yes, that’s right, the 3Dnatives 3D Explained series is back! This time, our own Elliot Saldukaite is back with a look at the wide range of polymer materials used in 3D printing. From photopolymer resins to metal and fire retardant materials, Elliot breaks down materials into the fields that use them, and what makes each of them unique. If you’re looking for a crash course in additive manufacturing methods, materials and jargon, look no further than the 3D Explained series. It’s a must-watch for those in the office who are just getting started, so how about checking them out for yourself and seeing just how much there is to discover!

Top 4: 3D Printed Underwater Motor

Previous top 5 videos nominee and 3D printed drone tester Michael Rechtin is back with another video on a fascinating construction with a 3D printed twist. Rather than using a standard brushless motor, he uses one as a template and then continues to build one entirely from scratch with 3D printing. The motor may look advanced, but he takes time to explain his steps along the way so that the most ambitious viewers can follow his examples and make their own motors at home. Follow along as we start in the workshop and end in the local lake for a serious test drive. This is one project we will definitely keep an eye on, and keep you updated with the next iteration of this underwater motor!

 Top 5: Europe’s Largest 3D Printed Building

In the final video from DW (Deutsche Welle) we view a report from Germany where the largest 3D printed building in Europe is underway using some familiar equipment to long-standing readers of 3Dnatives. The concrete 3D printing methods and COBOD construction printer is a fast and efficient construction solution that shows a glimpse into the future of the construction industry. The unique aspect of this video, we get to follow along and listen to the interview with the site construction manager, Chikaeze Ugwu, as he is on the clock at the construction site. DW breaks the process down and covers the reasoning behind the 3D printed construction from the labor perspective and the investment logic behind the project.
