Top 5 Videos: DED Simply Explained

Published on April 15, 2023 by Avery S.
DED Clearly Explained!

Today is Sunday, which is time for the week’s top 5 3D printing videos! To start, we have one of our very own, Elliot Saldukaite, to explain everything that you need to know about Directed Energy Deposition (DED), from the broad generalities of the technology to the nooks and crannies. Next, step onto Mars with NASA’s impressively visceral Mars simulation, and learn about Creality’s potential game-changing K1 Series printer. Finally, we have the first-ever office building built with 3D printing in Bengaluru, India, and the best 3D printed workshop projects collected over the past year. Happy Sunday, and as always, happy watching!

Top 1: Directed Energy Deposition Explained Simply

In our 3D Explained series, we guide you through all you need to know about the various additive manufacturing technologies and their application. In this week’s 3D explained, Elliot elaborates on some of the basic principles of DED, informing us on how it functions, the pros and cons, what materials are used, and for which industries it is most prevalent. While it may seem complicated at first glance, the two-minute information-packed explanation is bound to help you better understand the technology. Check it out if you want to become an expert in no time!

Top 2: Walk on Mars with NASA’s 3D Printed Habitat Simulation

Have you ever wanted to visit Mars? Well, now you can get pretty close. A 3D-printed structure with four small bedrooms designed to a simulation habitat on Mars is located at NASA’s Johnson Space Centre in Houston, Texas and this video takes you on a tour. The initiative is part of NASA’s plans to ship astronauts to the planet sometime in the 2030s.  The Crew Health and Performance Exploration Analog (CHAPEA) and the space agency are conducting a preliminary study before the actual take-off by observing the effects of a four-person crew staying in the compact, simulated Mars habitat for roughly one year. Watch the video to find out who will be part of the four-crew team! (spoiler, they’ll be announced in the summer).

Top 3: Creality’s K1 Series Finally Uncovered

Bambu Lab and Voron have made a splash of late, lighting a fire under the nose of other manufacturers and in doing so, increasing innovation and competition within the industry. This week, 3D printer manufacturer giant Creality unravelled the K1 Series, an FDM printer that could shake up the market. While the new model promises intriguing features like a print and acceleration speed of 600mm/s and 20000mm/s², an AI camera, and dual-hand auto levelling, let’s wait to see how the new printer on the block performs in action before coming to any conclusions. Are you sold on Creality’s K1 Series? Watch the video to learn more about it.

Top 4: First 3D Printed Post Office in Bengaluru

Near the Cambridge Layout in Bangalore, India, lies the first ever 3D constructed post office building. While it is currently under construction, senior executive MV Satish says the project will take no more than 45 days to finish. The printing process consists of putting sand, cement, waterproof chemicals, and water into a churner, turning the materials into a mixture paste that is then being used for the walls of the office building. The project is backed by business and engineering company Larsen & Toubou, pumping nearly two and a half million dollars into the project. The main advantage of 3D printing, in this case, explains Satish, is that it can be designed with any shape in mind. Check out the video below to see more about it!

Top 5: Best 3D Printed Woodworking Projects of 2022

A top five within a top five? What’s the world come to? Our last top five videos of the week feature the best 3D printed projects of 2022. From a polymer shelf to a multifunctional bench, explore these unique gadgets and let’s admire together the impressive capabilities of 3D printing technology. Various printers were used in the process, including the FLsun Super Racer, Artillery Sidewinder X1, and Artillery Sidewinder X2. Check out the video below to see these tools being used in action.
