This week’s Top 5 Videos on Christmas Eve is one of the most varied we’ve had. This ranking ranges from 3D printing in the Star Wars games, to 3D printed planes, and 3D printed military drones! Remember, a new Top 5 Videos is posted every Sunday, so don’t forget to tune in then.

1- 3D printing the Star Wars Battlefront 2 Droid Helmet

In EA’s new Star Wars Battlefront 2 game, 3D printing was used to create the droid helmets. This is because 3D printing allows for very intricate designs to be created in high-quality, so the mask could be used in the game’s designing. Since the new Star Wars film has recently released, we thought this as an ideal choice for our Top 5 Videos.

2- Smart Cups

Smart Cups are a new American startup who are selling empty, biodegradable cups. This isn’t all however, as these cups contain 3D printed ‘Katalyxt’ layers at the bottom of the cup which react with water when added to create a tasty soft drink. The first release contains 4 different flavors.

3- BigRep Studio

The BigRep Studio is the next printer aiming to achieve BigRep’s goal to create the most affordable industrial 3D printing systems.  This 3D printer has an incredibly large printing volume at 1000 x 500 x 500mm, and is built in Germany. We will have to see how this printer is adopted in the wider market.

4- Airbus plane part

The first 3D printed part of one of Airbus’ planes, the A400M, was recently printed. This titanium class 2 part was 3D printed as it was a complex part that needed to be printed in a high-quality. This suggests that 3D printing will become further used in the aerospace industry in the future.

5- 3D Printed Drones

This 13 minute documentary recorded at the US Army Research Laboratory looks into how 3D printing can be used in the military. It discusses various options, especially with 3D printed drones and how they can be used.
