Top 5 Videos of the Week: 3D printed frames and much more!

Published on December 15, 2019 by Carlota V.

This week we found the top 5 videos about 3D printing and the way additive manufacturing is shaping our society. The technology has infiltrated many sectors, from medical to automotive! Check out our selection of the week to keep up with the innovations! This week we touch on 3D printed frames, the world’s first 3D printed community and much more! If you enjoy these, you can view even more 3D printing videos on our Youtube channel. Hope you’ll enjoy and have a great Sunday!

Top 1: World’s first 3D printed community is being built in Mexico

We previously told you about New Story and ICON’s mission to create the world’s first 3D printed community as a means to combat homelessness. At the time, the exact location of the project had not been revealed. The project is now officially underway in Tabasco, Mexico. The two players have been joined by ÉCHALE, New Story’s partner in Mexico. The homes will be granted to local families currently living in extreme poverty and unsafe shelters. Learn more below!

Top 2: 3D Printed Frames

Fitz Frames is a young American company that creates custom-made glasses for children thanks to additive manufacturing. After scanning the shape of their face with a smartphone, the company 3D prints the frames of the glasses according to the child’s needs. Fitz Frames has invested in EOS’ Laser Powder Bed Fusion machines to manage the entire manufacturing process from start to finish. It can thus control the quality of its 3D printed glasses and respond more effectively to demand:

Top 3: Designing Raptor Rescue Vulture Tracking

Raptor Rescue is an association that aims to treat injured birds of prey. Vultures are now an endangered species – in Africa alone, their distribution and population has dropped by 95%. In the following video, the teams tried to understand the dangers faced by vultures and wanted to track them via a GPS system. It was necessary to design a discreet case, which the vultures could carry without too much problem. After several unsuccessful attempts, they turned to FDM 3D printing. They were able to create devices weighing only 6 grams, practical to wear and fully customizable. They can now understand where the vultures have gone, where the threats are, etc. :

Top 4: Pantone Validated Colors

Stratasys J835™ and J850™ printers are PANTONE Validated. This is the first additive manufacturing technology that offers professional design realism. Pantone, a leading global authority on professional colour standards in multiple vertical industries helps designers, modelers, and manufacturers all over the world accurately define, communicate, and consistently reproduce colours.

Top 5: 3D printed shoes

If you visited BASF’s stand at Formnext 2019, you must have seen the sneakers worn by its employees: white and black, they were 3D printedfrom the chemist’s Ultrasint TPU powder. 50 pairs were designed for the show. The entire outsole has been optimized in terms of weight and material use, which is why we have this striking lattice structure. It provides comfort, stability and a clean aesthetic:
