Top 5 Videos: From the Floor at 3D Print Paris

Published on October 15, 2023 by Michael M.

Welcome back to another top 5 videos! If you’re reading this, it means that another week filled with new creations, revelations, and discoveries in the world of additive manufacturing has passed us by and we, as ever, stand ready to deliver you the freshest catches of the week. To start off a weekend of 3D printing audio-visual absorption, we have a series of videos from the recently completed 3D printing expo in France, 3D Print Paris before stretching across the ocean to take a look at some local projects in the United States, with a few stopovers along the way to see some familiar faces and interesting factoids about the medical 3D printing sector. And so without further ado, let’s jump right in!

Top 1: A 3D Print Paris Interview From Yours Truly

In this 3Dnatives video, we take to the floor of 3D Print Paris and interview Stephane Fourrat, Director of LNA Prototyes, about the role of post-procession in small-batch production. From his perspective as a 3D printing and prototyping solutions company, he discusses this year’s exhibit at the 3D Print Paris trade show as well as the sort of finished items that have been created by LNA Prototypes. Learn more about the key stage of all 3D prints – post-processing – and why it is such an important concept for companies across the board and in different sectors. Follow along with the subtitled video or take the opportunity to practice your French at home!

Top 2: Flying to New Heights with 3D Printing

In this video from Trent Palmer, we take a look at a little FDM printer doing some heavy lifting with the help of a high-performance diamond nozzle. Trent takes 3D printing from the world of around-the-house repairs and replacement parts and takes it to the skies as he uses 3D printed parts from a commercially available 3D printer to upgrade his very real piloted prop aircraft. The project includes producing fairings to cover landing lights and some in-cabin equipment. With the help of a handheld 3D scanner, they are able to print out a series of covers that are lightweight, stable, and most importantly, aerodynamic. Just how much can such a small change affect a full-sized plane in mid-flight? Take a look and see for yourself!

Top 3: Adam Savage Tests a 3D Pen

In this video, we are back with our old pal Adam Savage as he checks out one of the lesser talked about 3D solutions these days – a 3D printing pen. An avid 3D printing fan, Adam is known for taking people through the entire process from concept to final creation, and this video is no different. From the initial unboxing of the Pika3D, he walks us through the process, highlighting that 3D printing pens may be used as a repair tool for larger 3D printed pieces. Indeed, he goes through different trials including filling and repairing gaps before building freehand. Not one to miss any detail, we get to hear about a crucial factor of any pen – the comfort of the grip as well as the viability for a longer project as he demonstrates. Watch more to see if it gets the Adam Savage seal of approval!

Top 4: 3D Printed Organs to Save the World

This video from Interesting Engineering takes us back into the medical world with a simple question: could 3D printed organs help solve the worldwide organ shortage? There are people in hospitals waiting for transplants that could potentially save their lives, and while supplies are naturally not readily available, the emerging field of 3D bioprinting could prove to be the answer with 3D scans, perfect customizability, and quick production time that can provide solutions to those in need. This video looks in depth at a program being conducted at MIT which may serve to replace components of a human heart. Top 5: Detroit’s First 3D Printed Home

To round out this top five series, we stop by Detroit, Michigan where the city’s first 3D printed house is nearing the end of its construction. We have talked about many 3D printed construction projects before, but often we see the construction phase, where we find wall after wall of grey, extruded concrete. In this video we get to see a home that is further along, displaying smooth, colored walls and variations in style and space, utilizing the unique construction method in the interior space as accent walls. Throughout the tour, we get to learn more about the construction process and how it can make a difference in efficiency, cost, and sustainability.
