Top 5 Videos of the Week: how to choose your 3D printing technology…

Published on March 1, 2020 by Carlota V.

This week we found the top 5 videos about 3D printing and the way additive manufacturing is shaping our society. The technology has infiltrated many sectors, from medical to automotive! Check out our selection of the week to keep up with the innovations! This week we touch on how to choose your 3D printing technology and much more! If you enjoy these, you can view even more 3D printing videos on our Youtube channel. Hope you’ll enjoy and have a great Sunday!

Top 1: How to get started with additive manufacturing

If you are into technology, you will have noticed that additive manufacturing has stolen the spotlight in recent years. Nevertheless, it is not the easiest technology to implement and incorporate into a project. There is no doubt that the new, quick and sometimes low-cost 3D printing techniques available on the market can offer great alternatives to traditional manufacturing methods like injection molding and CNC machining. You might be wondering which service should you turn to? How should you get your parts made? Who should you seek advice from? In this webinar we answer these questions by presenting Dassault Systèmes’ platform, 3DEXPERIENCE Make, developed to connect buyers to providers of 3D printing services all over the world. We are also joined by Jason Laing and Gavin Leggott, founders of the UK-based 3D printing service bureau, Promake, that tell us about their experience with the platform.

Top 2: Weerg uses HP’s Multi Jet Fusion technology

The manufacturing service based in Venice, Weerg has invested in multiple HP MJF machines over time. Today, it counts 6 machines in its offices, which they say 3D print 7 days a week with not much maintenance needed. This allows the company to deliver parts to customers in 3 days, considerably reducing lead times compared to traditional manufacturing methods. HP’s Multi Jet Fusion technology is similar to Binder Jetting, meaning it can make parts from multiple materials and with multiple colours, considerably expanding the possibilities of the technology!

Top 3: 3D printing for high-performance cars

Czinger is a young car manufacturer founded in 2019 and based in Los Angeles. It has recently developed a new concept for its high-performance car, including a clean design and relying on new technologies. These include, of course, additive manufacturing. Thanks to a powder bed fusion process, the young company was able to design several parts of its new concept car, the Czinger 21C Hypercar, which will be presented at the International Motor Show in Geneva next March. It is not clear which parts have been 3D printed, however the manufacturer said the chassis was one of them!

Top 4: What are the key features to look for when choosing a 3D printing technology?

Whether you are a beginner or an expert in additive manufacturing, it is not easy to choose the right 3D printing technology. From Fused Deposition Modeling (FDM), Stereolithography (SLA), Selective Laser Sintering (SLS) or Laser Powder Bed Fusion, there is no shortage of choice. Each technology works with different materials and consequently will offer different results. In the following video, Formlabs focuses on guiding your choice for a desktop 3D printing technology. Of course, if you are looking to invest in a desktop machine, cost will be very important. But how do you measure cost?

Top 5: 3D printing is changing the world?

In this video from Vice magazine we get to have an overview of the additive manufacturing market through the eyes of Krishna Andavolu. He explains to us what is behind this industrial revolution by meeting the players of the market. He begins by visiting the Wake Forest Institute for Regenerative Medicine, an American establishment that bioprints skin. His visit Formlabs and Desktop Metal, two leading 3D printing companies and finishes off by visiting the MIT Self Assembly Lab! How is each player revolutionizing manufacturing methods in its sector?
