Prusacaster, The 3D Printed Guitar you Can Make Yourself

Published on April 26, 2023 by Avery S.

3D printing has become an invaluable tool in creating musical instruments and has revolutionized production and access. Using customized materials and unique designs, instruments can now be made with specific sonic and physical characteristics previously impossible with traditional manufacturing methods. This breakthrough has also produced more affordable and accessible tools for musicians worldwide, particularly where traditional instruments may be scarce. Today, we will explore a new 3D printed guitar design that can be created from the comfort of your home.

The guitar, designed by Josef Prusa’s Czech company Prusa Research, is 3D printable and inspired by the iconic Fender Stratocaster guitar. The design has been meticulously developed to ensure functionality and aesthetics, resulting in a visually appealing and enjoyable instrument.

Creating the Prusacaster

Prusa Research has developed a partially 3D printed guitar, the Prusacaster, which combines the sonic features of a Fender Telecaster-style guitar with the aesthetics of a Fender Jazzmaster. The unique hexagonal body designed by Prusa is a functional work of art that can be completed at home by any music fan. The affordable guitar kit includes the neck and electronics and requires the 3D printing of the body using a Prusa i3 MK3S+ model 3D printer with a build plate of 250 x 210 x 210 mm.

The use of rigid materials such as PLA or PA11 filament with carbon fiber is recommended for best results. Assembly requires instant glue, some JST connectors, and guitar tuning. Check out the video to see the 3D printing process in action and the final sound of the guitar. Creating your guitar is an unforgettable experience that you shouldn’t miss.

While other guitars can be 3D printed, the Prusacaster stands out with its distinctive and innovative design and the convenience of printing it from home, provided one can access a Prusa 3D printer. With its blend of practicality, aesthetics, and affordability, this guitar is an excellent choice for those seeking to personalize their instrument, craft something one-of-a-kind, and do so without breaking the bank.  To check it out, head over to the Prusa website HERE.
