Infographic: 3D Printing in the Railway Sector
Whether for prototyping or end-use parts, it is undeniable that additive manufacturing can be used in many industries, indeed we have already told you about its use in space, sports and food, among many others. This includes the railway sector. The growth of 3D technologies in rail transport has resulted in its adoption by many of the leading companies in the sector since 2013, with a number of different examples in recent years. For example, Deutsche Bahn, Alstom, Renfe, Angel Trains, Nederlandse Spoorwegen, Bombardier Transportation, Hitatchi Rail and Union Pacific all use 3D printing to some capacity. Furthermore, it has only become even more widespread since it has become possible to use flame-retardant materials that correspond to EU regulations like EN 45545 with additive manufacturing.
But what exactly are the applications for 3D printing in the railway industry? How widespread is its use? To answer these questions, among others, we have created an infographic dedicated to exploring this very topic. From applications and uses cases to key figures and a general timeline of the use of 3D technologies in the field, we give a better idea of the potential of additive manufacturing in the railway sector. This includes the existence o digital warehouses for spare parts, its usefulness in train maintenance, tooling and prototyping and much more.
