Musical instrument manufacturing has been synonymous with time, money and prestige. Stradivarius violins, for instance, are still considered the best in the world for their excellent construction. Although more affordable manufacturing methods have been available for some time, a technology has recently emerged that promises to break this barrier and many others in the music industry: additive manufacturing. To some extent, 3D technologies have democratized instrument manufacturing thanks to powerful consumer printers, free software and free 3D models. What’s more, they have made it possible to create instruments with unique designs, accessories and even replicas of old instruments for educational purposes or preserving heritage. These diverse applications encourage experimentation, and the technology is gradually rewriting the way musical instruments are produced.

In honor of World Music Day, we have prepared an infographic to highlight the role of 3D technologies in the music industry. Here, you will find some of the most relevant projects and ways the technology has been used, as well as key figures and dates worth noting. It’s time to tune in to the figures below—and don’t forget, you can download the infographic as a PDF at the bottom of the page.
