Known for its use in the automotive, aerospace and architectural sectors, 3D printing is now present in many fields. And the interior design sector is no exception. To decorate our homes and obtain functional objects, additive manufacturing offers several advantages. It can help to create personalized objects adapted to the desires and needs of the inhabitants, but also to produce parts in a sustainable way. Signify, one of the world’s leading lighting companies, is 3D printing lighting fixtures to promote the circular economy and revolutionize the lighting market. The company has recently set up a dedicated 3D printing department in its existing lighting factory in Vadodara, India.

Signify’s 3D printed lighting fixtures are designed for everyone. Hotels, offices, shops or even individuals, the company says its lights can be adapted to all types of locations. Sumit Joshi, vice president and general manager at Signify Innovations India explains, “We are proud to be the first lighting manufacturer to produce 3D printed luminaires in India on an industrial scale in alignment with the Indian government’s agenda of a self-reliant India. It also reinforces our position at the forefront of lighting and sustainable innovation. Printing luminaires provides a more flexible, fast and environmentally friendly way to manufacture as we can create new, or customize existing designs, that fulfill customer needs quickly without huge investments and long development cycles. Customers can have their ideas brought to life in a matter of days rather than months and printing requires less energy.”

To get Signify’s fixtures, consumers can design and order them on the company’s website. Of course, thanks to additive manufacturing, they can be customized. Customers can choose the texture and color in order to get a unique, custom-designed fixture. It is also possible to choose the finish, between opaque, metallic and translucent. Finally, according to Signify, the fixtures are easy to install, mainly due to their light weight, two-thirds the weight of a conventional luminaire.

Additionally, through 3D printing and the use of environmentally friendly materials, Signify aims to reduce its carbon footprint. The lights are 3D printed from 100% recyclable polycarbonate, and can be reused or else refurbished. With this recyclable material, the company highlights the circular economy and calls on its customers to become eco-responsible. An approach shared by more and more companies, especially in the 3D printing sector. In fact, compared to a traditionally built metal luminaire, Signify’s tailored made luminaires have a 47% lower carbon footprint, certainly an important consideration as many seek to be more green.
