Formula 1 is releasing a new collection of fragrances, the F1 Fragrances Engineered Collection, which includes a range of five luxury scents. Back in 2019, Formula 1 had launched its first line of fragrances using metal 3D printing technology, in collaboration with designer Ross Lovegrove, known as the F1 Collector’s Editions collection – each perfume retailed for $10,000! This year’s more affordable collection provides 5 new unisex scents designed using the latest digital light synthesis (DLS) 3D printing technology. The elegant, aerodynamic bottle is inspired by the lines of an F1 car’s chassis and is housed by an intricate, technopolymeric resin-based exoskeleton.

Following the success of 2019’s bottle designs, designer and visionary Ross Levogrove worked on the design of these bottles once again. He explains: “My thought behind the exoskeleton was on the one hand sustainability; to create something that hosts the fragrance bottle which can be replaced once used and re-inserted into the exoskeleton, and the use of 3D printing which is extremely efficient, without waste; only the forms needed are produced, much like an F1 car. On the other hand, it reminded me of the safety cell for the drivers, the monocoque, as it protects the fragrance bottle in a similar way.”

Digital Light Synthesis is Carbon‘s proprietary technology, and similarly to stereolithography it projects light through an oxygen-permeable window into a reservoir of UV-curable resin: photopolyremization occurs, which means the resin is hardened once it comes into contact with the light source. Carbon’s process is much faster than the typical SLA process and it can create very complex shapes thanks to its precision such as the exoskeleton on these perfume bottles.

Priced at $250, the 3D printed perfumes are named Precious Mettle, Turn 1, Overtake 320, Neeeum White and Carbon Reign. The scents themselves are designed to take fans on a sensory journey through a thrilling race, fusing next-generation ingredients with classic materials.

Precious Mettle is described as ‘a fresh, intense, woody fragrance with a metallic twist that represents the courageousness required from drivers as they line up on the grid’, whilst Turn 1 is ‘an avantgarde composition, with inimitable accords of burning rubber and rain on salty asphalt, honouring the performance and determination of powering through the first corner’. The most passionate scent of the collection comes through in Overtake 320,  a ‘warm and spicy composition that races with a fiery blend of cinnamon and bergamot’. Neeeum White is a tribute to the fearlessness of F1 heroes as they reach the final straight, a ‘confident fragrance with a daring cocktail of spices, contrasting hot black pepper with the coolness of juniper’. Finally, Carbon Reign, created to replicate the sense of victory, captures ‘a vibrant and energetic scent built around a champagne accord, dry amber and woods’. The full range is launching in March 2021, you can find more information HERE.
