Company

The Ministry of Defence is the department responsible for implementing the defence policy set by His Majesty’s Government, and is the headquarters of the British Armed Forces.

Mission

An exciting ‘hands on’ engineering post designing and producing ground-breaking ‘multi-material’ prototypes for a specialist military community within UK Defence. The successful candidate will be a an innovative ‘hands-on’ technically astute and qualified engineer, who likes to push the limits of design, solving difficult problems and producing engineering grade prototype solutions.

The role is specific and therefore the post must be for an experienced practising mechanical design engineer, ideally with experience in both precision engineering and design office environments. You will be responsible to the head of mechatronics on behalf of the commanding officer of the unit, for the design, delivery, and production of prototype engineering solutions, including engineering advice to the specialist military community.

There will be an opportunity to develop line management skills as well as professional skills. You may be required to act as a line manager or mentor to industry and MOD graduate work placement schemes. Opportunities will also be available to visit relevant external organisations and companies to maintain your skill levels at the forefront of engineering technologies.

Profile

Delivering at pace is a key aspect of the role and you should thrive in this environment. You will be ‘on point’ and the specialist in manufacturing and production techniques, materials, and equipment. You will advise and guide the unit in additive and classic manufacturing capabilities. You will be expected to be fully conversant with CAD software and have had experience with traditional and modern machinery in a workshop environment. You will be conversant and passionate about the opportunities that additive manufacturing offers to the community and be able to advise on new capabilities. Where there are gaps in your skills or knowledge base, you will be expected to undergo training in these areas.

You will have an OfQual level 4 qualification in relevant mechanical engineering discipline, or relevant evidence of comparable experience and skills.

This position is ‘hands-on’ and technical. You should not apply if you do not see yourself in an engineering workshop conducting hands-on duties such as conducting design and production outputs, including Additive and traditional Manufacturing.
