3D Printed Handbag Featured in Emily in Paris
Have you seen the latest season of Emily in Paris? The cult television series has made waves (both positive and negative) since it first aired in October 2020 and the first half of the fourth season, released on Netflix on August 15th, has similarly been the topic of much conversation. Including the fact that a 3D printed handbag, the COMETE bag, was featured on the show.
Fashion is one of the cores of the sleek show, not the least because of its location in one of the fashion capitals of the world: Paris. With the premise being an American who moves to the city of lights in order to give a new perspective to a French marketing firm, the outfits worn by the titular Emily, played by Lily Collins, create as much buzz as the antics of the heroine. And with cutting-edge, adventurous but chic looks making up Emily’s wardrobe (even if many agree that the clothes can tend towards the outrageous), it should probably come as no surprise that the costume department, led by Marilyn Fitoussi, has now chosen a piece made using additive manufacturing.
3D printing has quickly been making a name for itself in the fashion world. Between celebrities like Rosalia who have used AM for unique garments, to printers designed specifically for the sector, for example the solution from Stratasys, it is clear that designers are seeing more and more the benefits of using 3D technologies. These include being able to make the fashion industry more sustainable as well as creating even more unique creations, such as those done by Iris van Herpen or Lilach Porges. Now, with this handbag, we have yet another piece to add to the list, the first one to our knowledge to be done using silicone 3D printing.
Featuring the COMETE bag and its 3D printed design in Emily in Paris
It is important to note that COMETE bag already existed before its inclusion in Emily in Paris. In fact, it was made as a collaboration between Laura Deweilde of fashion house Incxnnue and engineer Thomas Batigne from silicone 3D printing solution provider Lynxter. Made out of calfskin as well as 3D printed silicone flowers and grape anthocyanins that decorate the bag, the fully Made in France creation has been highlighted as a blend of fashion and industry. The result is a futuristic almost spaceship like, luxury item.
Laura Deweilde, creator and designer of Incxnnue, further expands, “For this new creation, the idea was to work with more organic forms with floral inspiration. Reflecting on a floral pattern I had previously modeled, I wanted to push further in terms of creativity and experimentation. By collaborating with Thomas, we were able to transform this exciting and innovative project. With Lynxter, merging the organic design with a more pure and architectural form was a beautiful challenge successfully achieved for this creation, particularly with a studied research and assembly of this new bag.”
The 3D printed elements were made with the S300X – LIQ21 | LIQ11 from Lynxter before being integrated onto the leather design.
