After establishing in 1939, Chicago-based Sciaky quickly made a name for itself as one of the leading providers of advanced welding systems and job shop welding services. Since 2009, the company has also delved into the metal additive manufacturing market, offering electron beam additive manufacturing (EBAM®) solutions.

Sciaky has a long history working with players such as Lockheed Martin, the Department of Defense, Aubert & Duval and Airbus, among others. Indeed, since commercializing its EBAM, a technology which falls under the umbrella of Directed Energy Deposition (DED), solutions, it has unveiled a number of cost-effective industry solutions including the EBAM 300 which has the largest build envelope in the market for large metal part production, creating parts over 19′ in length.

EBAM technology works with an electron beam gun which deposits metal (via wire feedstock), layer by layer, to create a part. Another aspect for which the company is known is its integrated software, such as Sciaky’s IRISS® (Interlayer Real-time Imaging & Sensing System) which is a patented Closed-Loop Control software. It enables consistent part geometry, mechanical properties, microstructure, metal chemistry and more, especially important when considering the materials that the technology is compatible with, notably titanium, tantalum, and nickel-based alloys.
